Job Summary

The University of Washington School of Drama is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Director and Scene Shop Manager to join their team. As a key member of the production staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of School of Drama productions, including scenic elements, and managing the scene shop and its staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Technical Director for School of Drama productions, working with student designers to assess, plan, and guide all scenic elements through design, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Lead the shop staff in the construction, transportation, and installation of scenery, and train student assistants and running crews in the safe and effective use of equipment and scenic elements.
  • Oversee and advise on the safe use of complex moving and automated scenery, and support and coordinate a range of workers from professional production staff to first-time student crews.
  • Manage the scene shop, including overseeing the shop calendar, worker schedules, and production-related budgets, and lead scene shop staff and crews in production-related planning and decision-making.
  • Maintain scene shop and related equipment, and ensure UW health and safety standards are met and enforced.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in theater, technical theater, or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in live event production, including knowledge related to scenery, props, and theatrical rigging.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree related to theatre production/technical theater.
  • Experience/knowledge related to lighting, sound, projections, and costumes.
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD drafting software, ability to generate detailed and accurate drawings, and to advise staff and students in the creation of the same.
  • Experience within an academic institution and/or educational organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within the production department and the School of Drama community.
