Position Overview

The School of Journalism and Communication seeks a tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor rank with expertise in the regulation and application of new and emerging information and communication technologies, including generative artificial intelligence (AI), immersive media (VR/AR/XR), and digital platforms. A successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in media law and other specialized courses within our undergraduate programs in Media Studies, Journalism, Advertising, and Public Relations. The candidate may also contribute to our master's programs and PhD program in Communication and Media Studies.

We seek an exceptional scholar and educator whose research and teaching focus on:

1) The legal regulation of new information and communication technologies;
2) The impact of these technologies on human behavior;
3) The ethical considerations surrounding the use and regulation of these technologies;
4) Related issues in media and technology law, including free speech, privacy, and platform regulation.

A successful candidate will have expertise in US media law, particularly the First Amendment, and may also have knowledge of international media law and technology regulation. We seek individuals who bring diverse perspectives on media, law, and technology, and whose work addresses issues of bias, discrimination, and justice in the context of technology.

This faculty member will join an appropriate area within the School based on their background and interests, contributing to making the School a hub for students to engage with the ethical, social, and cultural implications of digital technologies.

Department Overview

The School of Journalism and Communication is an accredited institution serving a diverse student body. Degrees offered include BA, BS, MA, MS, and Ph.D., alongside minors in Media Studies and Game Studies. The School has a rich history, being one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in communication, media studies, journalism, law, or a related field, or a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or equivalent terminal degree.
Expertise in law, policy, and regulation as it pertains to media and communication technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

A record of scholarly achievement, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Expertise in First Amendment law and other relevant areas of media law and regulation.
Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Potential to mentor students effectively.
Experience or interest in grant writing.
