About the Role:

  • Position Overview:

    Serves as a vital resource, mentor, and consultant for nursing staff in the realm of vascular access therapy. Responsible for assessing and performing IV starts, managing products, infusions, and procedures. If certified, inserts and monitors peripherally placed central venous, mid-line, and peripheral I.V. catheters. Actively engages as a professional member of VOICE, providing valuable feedback on pertinent issues discussed in meetings. Participates in unit councils to enhance NDNQI nursing-sensitive indicators and Patient Experience metrics. Collaborates with care team members to attract and retain a high-quality nursing workforce.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or Certifications: Must be licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia.
  • Educational Requirements: Associate Nursing Degree required. Certification for PICC line insertion to be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Other: Membership in a professional organization is preferred.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or Certifications: National certification in a clinical specialty is preferred.
  • Educational Requirements: Bachelor of Nursing Degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Acute care RN experience with proven ability to perform job functions.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology related to central line placement and peripheral vasculature.
  • Proficient in aseptic technique.
  • Knowledgeable in the care and maintenance of catheters.
  • Demonstrated success in placing PICC lines under the supervision of a certified nurse (optional).
  • Expertise in initiating IV catheters across all age demographics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists nursing staff in resolving IV therapy-related patient care challenges, including initiating IV catheters in difficult cases. Evaluates patient infusion issues and implements effective interventions. Provides IV therapy guidance and information to nursing staff, students, physicians, patients, and families. Administers protocols for extravasation in cases of vesicant infiltrates. Acts as an expert clinician for IV starts across all age groups.
  • Stays updated on advancements in IV therapy. Engages in performance improvement initiatives related to IV therapy. Communicates relevant updates to staff regarding advancements in IV therapy practices. Offers expertise to units in evaluating IV therapy practices and recommends enhancements to patient care. Provides input on equipment and products related to IV therapy, including participation in product trials.
  • Accesses various types of IV ports and lines, demonstrating proficiency in accessing port-a-caths and Triple Lumen catheters. Serves as a teacher, coach, and mentor to staff on the care and utilization of various IV ports and lines.
  • Mentors new RN staff on IV therapy and peripheral IV insertions. Acts as a consultant for managing patients with peripheral and central venous catheters. Serves as a preceptor for students and new staff, assisting them in acquiring IV therapy skills. Validates IV skills for nurses on an annual basis.
  • Performs declotting, dressing changes, and discontinuation of central venous catheters. Demonstrates skills in declotting IV catheters and in the safe discontinuation of central IV catheters, including those used for dialysis access. Conducts central line dressing changes utilizing sterile techniques.

Unit-Specific Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, recommends, and monitors the effectiveness of PICC line placements. Responsible for inserting a minimum of 5 PICC lines monthly with a success rate of 80%. Completes necessary performance improvement documentation for all PICC line placements. Acts as a resource for staff education for patients requiring PICC lines.
  • Quality Improvement: Participates in essential monitoring projects aimed at quality improvement. Provides insights and consultations to units to facilitate changes in IV therapy practices. Suggests and develops monitoring tools for use across the organization or on specific units based on identified IV therapy issues.

Collaborates with various departments, including Infection Control, Performance Improvement, nursing units, and pharmacy, to establish standards and guidelines for IV therapy.
