General Overview

As a vital member of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, employees may be tasked with duties across various divisions including patrol, narcotics, civil process, warrants, courthouse security, criminal investigations, or school policing.

Depending on the assigned area, responsibilities may include undercover operations and surveillance, patrol duties, serving civil and criminal processes, or conducting investigative work.


Key Responsibilities

Criminal Enforcement Division

Depending on specific assignments, responsibilities may encompass, but are not limited to:

1. Patrolling designated areas, primarily by vehicle, to deter criminal activity and enforce laws and regulations.

2. Responding to emergency calls and routine complaints, taking appropriate action as necessary.

3. Issuing traffic citations and directing vehicular flow.

4. Investigating traffic incidents and crimes against individuals and property, collaborating with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

5. Maintaining records of activities and generating reports related to crimes, complaints, accidents, and investigations.

6. Filing cases with the District Attorney or U.S. Attorney.

7. Executing lawful arrests for violations of state laws and local ordinances.

8. Serving various warrants and court documents.

9. Interviewing witnesses and suspects, taking statements and depositions.

10. Assisting other law enforcement agencies as required.

11. Conducting surveillance on suspects and designated locations.

12. Engaging with informants and executing undercover narcotics operations.

13. Handling and caring for canines involved in narcotics investigations.

14. Performing background checks on applicants for law enforcement and corrections roles.

15. Serving as a bailiff in county and district courts.

16. Collecting and labeling evidence, taking photographs and fingerprints, securing and transporting detainees, and testifying in court.

17. Engaging with community groups to foster positive public relations and inform citizens about police activities and crime prevention strategies.

18. Addressing animal control issues, particularly concerning livestock on roadways.

19. Transporting arrested individuals to the county from various locations.

20. Performing any additional duties as assigned by the Sheriff's Office.

Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

2. At least one year of law enforcement-related experience is preferred.

3. Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

1. Must possess a Basic Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

2. Must hold a current valid Texas operator's driver's license.

3. Must be eligible for insurance coverage by the County's insurance provider.

Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions, departmental policies, rules, regulations, and laws.

2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees, officials, law enforcement agencies, and the public.

3. Ability to assess situations and adopt effective and reasonable courses of action.

4. Ability to write clear and concise reports and maintain accurate records.

5. Ability to learn the operation and maintenance of vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment.

9. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

10. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

13. Ability to address practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.

14. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
