Storm Water Operator I FT

We are seeking a highly skilled Storm Water Operator I FT to join our team at Washington City. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for performing a variety of entry-level skilled duties related to city-wide stormwater operations, including construction, collection, and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities- Participate in stormwater system cleaning, debris and obstacle removal, excavation, and repair of stormwater lines, connections, manholes, debris basins, dry-wash, and stormwater detention basins and their appurtenances.
- Clean stormwater lines, excavate, repair, and replace stormwater lines and mains, operate hydro/jet truck and vactor truck to clean the storm drain system, inspect and clean City-owned and privately owned storm drain basins, inlet boxes, manholes, oil/grit separators, canals, and pipes.
- Operate small machinery, including skid loaders and backhoes, spray, cut, and remove weeds, trim shrubs and trees as necessary to maintain detention basins, ponds, and drainage channels.
- Perform catch-basin maintenance, clean and clear basins of accumulated solids and sediments to prevent clogging of drainage lines and flooding, monitor catch basin grate tops to prevent accumulation and dispose of blockage.
- Ensure proper slope and grade for improved water velocity and flow during stormwater swell construction.
- Maintain stormwater systems and stormwater system equipment in operating order by inspecting, removing, repairing, and replacing malfunctioning parts and sections, conduct dry weather screening of storm drain outfall locations throughout the City.
- Operate a variety of vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of stormwater collection systems, set up traffic barricades and control equipment in accordance with the MUTCD, observe safety precautions regarding traffic control, confined space entrance, trenching, excavating, and power equipment operation.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment, investigate and resolve complaints concerning the stormwater collection system in an efficient and timely manner.
- Remove and inspect manhole covers and manholes, place and finish concrete to raise manholes to street surfaces, replace manhole covers as needed, clean storm drains, remove water and debris from flooded streets.
- Perform routine maintenance checks on service vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and effective operations, check oil and fluid levels, tire air pressure, etc., schedule service equipment for comprehensive preventive maintenance.
- Education and Experience: Graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience performing above and related duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of pipeline construction methods, practices, and procedures for stormwater collection systems, hazards and precautions associated with trench work and pipeline construction and maintenance, interpersonal communication skills, basic hand and power tools required to install and maintain pipeline, traffic control and diversion, tools and equipment required to lay and repair stormwater lines, care of required tools and equipment, OSHA safety standards, etc.
- Ability to adapt to emergency or unusual situations, tolerate weather extremes in the workplace, communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, plan and organize work of subordinate personnel, evaluate employee performance and make related decisions, enforce policies, procedures, regulations, and standards without partiality, perform strenuous manual labor, develop working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Special Qualifications: Must possess a class "A" commercial driver's license (CDL), become a certified flagger, and become confined space certified.
Employees in this position normally work in an outdoor environment, subject to changing and seasonal weather extremes. Frequently, tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting; daily potential for hazardous exposure to electrical shock, industrial wastes, and raw sewage (containing pathogens such as typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, polio, tetanus, etc.); daily exposure to moving parts and equipment such as pumps, motors, heavy equipment, etc.; daily or regular exposure to traffic hazards working in the public right-of-way; daily or regular exposure to hazards associated with confined space operations.

The City also contributes 4.5% into a 401(K) plan for all eligible employees that are in the public employee fund. All benefits are effective on the 1st day of work. The City also provides 12 paid holidays, 12 paid sick days per year, plus vacation accruals.
