Role Summary:

UNC Hospitals Rehabilitation Services is currently seeking candidates for a full-time Acute Care Physical Therapist Assistant role. This position supports our Enhanced Rehabilitation program within the acute hospital environment, where the PTA will deliver expert therapeutic interventions to a varied patient demographic with differing acuity levels. The selected individual will work closely with an interdisciplinary team to ensure outstanding patient-centered care.

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in implementing and maintaining unit-based care team models aimed at optimizing patient care outcomes and adhering to best practices. Strong time management and communication skills are essential in this dynamic setting; prior clinical experience in acute care is highly desirable. A robust work ethic and a commitment to personal and professional growth are key attributes for applicants.

The selected individual will be expected to work 40 hours weekly, Monday through Friday, with potential weekend and holiday responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to assess patient needs, develop family education plans, and create discharge strategies.
2. Mentor PT technicians or fellow physical therapist assistants and assess their competency according to departmental standards.
3. Maintain accurate documentation of patient treatments and progress towards established goals, completing necessary departmental records for billing and statistical purposes.
4. Educate physical therapy and physical therapist assistant students.
5. Administer skilled physical therapy treatments to a diverse patient population. Design and instruct exercise programs to achieve physical therapy objectives. Fit and educate patients on the use of mobility devices, including braces, walkers, canes, and crutches, ensuring safe navigation of stairs, curbs, and uneven surfaces. Teach patients airway clearance techniques and perform chest physical therapy procedures. Instruct patients and families on home exercise regimens, ambulation, and the use of adaptive equipment for discharge.
6. Engage in departmental meetings and in-services to contribute to the quality of clinical services.
7. Ensure quality by maintaining accurate and reliable records of patient procedures and progress. Participate in quality improvement initiatives alongside clinical specialists and other healthcare professionals, contributing to ongoing quality enhancement efforts in collaboration with department leadership.

Additional Information:
Education Requirements:
● Completion of an accredited two-year Physical Therapist Assistant program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Licensed as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the state of North Carolina.
● BLS certification.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● No prior experience necessary.
