Summary:

UNC Hospitals Rehabilitation Services is seeking applications for a full-time Acute Care Physical Therapist Assistant role. This position supports our Enhanced Rehabilitation program within the acute hospital environment, where the PTA will deliver skilled therapeutic interventions to a diverse patient demographic with varying levels of acuity. The selected individual will work closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure exceptional patient-centered care.

The chosen candidate will play a key role in assisting with the implementation and maintenance of unit-based care team models aimed at optimizing patient care outcomes and best practices. Strong time management and communication skills are essential in this dynamic setting; prior clinical experience in acute care is highly preferred. A robust work ethic and a growth-oriented mindset are critical attributes for prospective applicants.

Work Schedule: The selected candidate will be expected to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and holiday shifts.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to assess patient needs, discuss family education strategies, and plan for discharges.
2. Mentor PT technicians or other physical therapist assistants and evaluate their competencies according to departmental guidelines.
3. Document patient treatments and progress towards established goals, ensuring accurate departmental records for billing and statistics.
4. Instruct physical therapy and physical therapist assistant students.
5. Provide skilled physical therapy treatments to a diverse range of patients. Design and implement exercise programs to achieve PT goals. Fit and instruct patients on the use of ambulatory devices, including braces, walkers, canes, and crutches, ensuring safe navigation of stairs, curbs, and uneven surfaces. Teach patients airway clearance techniques and perform chest physical therapy procedures. Educate patients and families on home exercises, ambulation, and the use of adaptive equipment for discharge.
6. Contribute to the quality of clinical services through active participation in departmental meetings and in-services.
7. Maintain valid and reliable records of patient procedures and progress, contributing to quality improvement initiatives alongside clinical specialists and other healthcare professionals.

Additional Information:
Education Requirements:
● Graduation from an accredited two-year Physical Therapist Assistant program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Licensed as a Physical Therapist Assistant by the state of North Carolina.
● BLS certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● No prior experience is necessary.
