Educational Speech and Language Specialist

Position Overview
The Washoe County School District is seeking a dedicated and qualified Speech and Language Specialist to join our team. This role is essential in providing both direct and consultative services to students with special needs, focusing on enhancing their communication skills in relation to academic tasks. Services will be delivered in the least restrictive environment, which may include classroom integration, individual sessions, and collaboration with educational staff.
Key Responsibilities
The Speech and Language Specialist will:
1. Conduct diagnostic and remedial services for students facing communication challenges, including:
- Receptive and expressive language disorders
- Articulation and phonological issues
- Fluency and voice disorders
2. Identify students at risk due to educational, physical, or mental limitations and assist in the assessment process.
3. Prepare comprehensive assessment reports and participate in the IEP team to determine appropriate interventions.
4. Develop individualized therapy plans aimed at fostering student success in special education.
5. Maintain accurate records and stay updated with the latest methodologies and research in speech-language pathology.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates should possess:
1. A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology is preferred, or a Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience.
2. At least one year of experience in a school setting is desirable.
3. Knowledge of various assessment tools and the ability to write and interpret Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
4. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and families.
Licenses and Certifications
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a valid State of Nevada driver's license and a Nevada Teaching License in Speech and Language Impairments. Certification of clinical competence through a national organization is preferred.
Work Environment
The role involves a standard office environment with minimal physical demands. Safety precautions typical of educational settings are required.
