Overview:
The Experiential Therapy Specialist is responsible for designing, executing, and assessing therapeutic programs tailored to the unique needs of patients and residents. This role involves meticulous documentation within specified program areas and includes the coordination, evaluation, and mentorship of team members. The Specialist is expected to uphold basic staffing requirements and ensure the smooth operation of the department in the absence of leadership. A comprehensive understanding of various expressive and recreational modalities is essential.

The position requires a deep knowledge of the psychosocial dynamics of patient and resident groups, alongside the effective application of expressive and recreational activities in a mental health environment.

These activities may encompass adventure-based and environmental engagements, sports, dance, group initiatives, arts and crafts, music, outdoor pursuits, art media, psychodrama, horticulture, and challenge courses.

Identify and address concerns effectively.
Participate in the Mentorship Program.

Engage with the Rogers Operating System (ROS).
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the ROS framework.
Implement the ROS model within departmental functions.
Identify and communicate ROS-related concerns throughout the organization.
Educate and inform staff about the Experiential Therapy ROS initiatives.
Contribute to the development and monitoring of ROS services, taking a leadership role in data collection and metrics.
Assist in the ongoing refinement and creation of departmental standard operating procedures.

Support the recruitment, training, and education of new team members under leadership guidance.
Participate in candidate interviews as requested.
Provide feedback on potential hires as needed.
Educate staff on the principles and philosophy of Experiential Therapy.
Conduct training sessions for staff on patient and resident care programming.

Demonstrate familiarity with Joint Commission and other regulatory compliance standards.

Engage in learning and applying relevant standards within the Experiential Therapy department, aiding newer staff in this process.

Attend informational sessions to enhance awareness of regulatory requirements.

Programming.

Facilitate experiential therapy sessions as scheduled and willingly take on additional groups as needed.

Assess, plan, and coordinate programming to address the needs of patients and residents.
Maintain supplies, equipment, and spaces designated for Experiential Therapy.
Exhibit flexibility in work assignments, including schedule adjustments and program modifications.
Complete job responsibilities with minimal supervision and fulfill tasks assigned by management.
Possess a solid understanding of various experiential therapies.
Assist in coordinating specialized programming such as Pet Therapy, horticulture, and outdoor activities.
Demonstrate a readiness to undertake any duties within the scope of one's role and professional qualifications.

Documentation and Treatment.
Develop treatment plans and evaluations in accordance with Experiential Therapy policies.
Complete therapeutic documentation as per organizational guidelines.
Assist in auditing documentation completed by the team.

Patient/Resident Understanding.
Exhibit knowledge of intervention strategies and apply redirection techniques to ensure the safety of patients and residents.
Monitor behaviors and intervene appropriately, utilizing de-escalation techniques and the least restrictive measures possible.
Establish therapeutic rapport with patient and resident groups while maintaining professional boundaries.
Demonstrate an understanding of the psychosocial functioning of each patient and resident group, including common diagnostic categories and their impact on behavior within the therapeutic setting. Exhibit knowledge of treatment models and procedures (behavioral, recovery, etc.) and their application in therapy.

Student Interns.
Engage in activities related to student recruitment and promote the internship program.
Supervise student interns in collaboration with the Experiential Therapy manager and educational institutions.

The Experiential Therapy Specialist is responsible for developing and reviewing policies and procedures for the student intern program in conjunction with the Experiential Therapy manager.

Staff Requirements.
Adhere to Infection Control and Employee Health protocols.
Follow organizational policies and procedures related to Human Resources and Experiential Therapy.
Attend all mandatory training sessions and relevant in-services.

Fulfill all educational requirements and obligations related to licensure and regulatory standards governing the program.

Complete all required orientation and training competencies within the Experiential Therapy department and organization.
Take a leadership role in departmental meetings as required.
Meet regularly with the Experiential Therapy manager for clinical guidance, training, program evaluation, and issue reporting.
Be prepared to lead Experiential Therapy initiatives in the absence of the supervisor or manager.
Conduct program-specific activities off-site, adhering to procedures for using organizational vehicles for designated patient populations.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Physical and Mental Demands:
Effective verbal and auditory communication skills are necessary for interaction with patients, residents, and colleagues. Numerical skills are required for record-keeping and computer operations.
Ability to read and communicate effectively through written, verbal, and auditory means is essential.
Position may involve exposure to aggressive or combative patients.

Must be physically and mentally capable of fulfilling job responsibilities, as verified by a licensed physician's examination, in accordance with post-employment physical requirements.


Education and Training Requirements:


A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in recreation, art, music, dance, psychodrama, or other expressive therapies, with certification or registration through the appropriate credentialing board preferred.

A Master’s degree or certification/license in one of the following is required: R-DMT; ATR; CTRS; MTBC; SAC-IT; TIC; Yoga, LPC, or other behavioral health-related credentials.

A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in group facilitation within a behavioral health context is required. Mentorship experience with Experiential Therapy staff is preferred.
A valid driver's license is necessary for certain locations.

Certification in CPR from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required within thirty days of hire, with annual re-certification.

Formal training in managing aggressive patients is required within sixty days of hire, with annual re-certification, including self-defense training.

Training in Ropes and Challenge Course by Rogers Behavioral Health is required, with yearly renewal as applicable.

Employees working in Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs must have at least one year of educational or work experience and appropriate licensure or certification when serving children with mental health disorders.

Compliance with training requirements for Residential Care Centers and Community-Based Residential Facilities is necessary for relevant staff.
