Role of the OR Nurse:
The Operating Room Nurse serves as both Circulator and Scrub Nurse within the surgical environment. This role involves organizing and delivering individualized, professional patient care to those undergoing surgical procedures.

Nursing care is provided in alignment with the hospital's objectives, policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as AORN, ASPAN, and SGNA standards.

Engagement in patient education is essential, incorporating the unique needs and behaviors of diverse age and cultural groups into care planning and delivery.

Participation in quality improvement initiatives is also a key responsibility.

Periop 101 Course Overview:
The Perioperative 101 Course is a 6-8 month blended learning program designed for novice nurses entering the perioperative field. It integrates the AORN Core Curriculum evidence-based module study with classroom instruction, OR clinical skills, and simulation labs. The program includes OR observation and hands-on experience in all aspects of perioperative nursing skills.

This course aims to enhance the nurse's educational foundation, enabling them to practice independently in a perioperative role.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Practice independently at a foundational level in a perioperative role.
  • Advance their career as a professional perioperative nurse.
  • Enhance patient outcomes through evidence-based practices.
  • Recognize workplace safety, practice guidelines, and standards to improve care quality.
Qualifications:

  • Current CT RN License
  • ASN candidates with prior OR nursing experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Recent BSN graduates will be enrolled in a Periop 101 orientation upon hiring.
  • Previous OR nursing experience is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to solve problems independently.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • CNOR certification is a plus.
