Job Summary

UPMC Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a full-time Patient Services Representative to join their team. This is a Monday-Friday, daylight position with no weekends or holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clear and understandable instructions to patients to help them navigate the healthcare system.
  • Follow up with patients to resolve any questions or concerns and ensure continuity of care.
  • Assist with administrative duties, including scanning medical records and faxing documents.
  • Guide patients through self-arrival technology or check-in patients at the desk, depending on their preference.
  • Schedule or connect patients to resources for ancillary services.
  • Understand and apply the principles of service recovery to resolve issues that do not meet patient expectations.
  • Assist patients with financial responsibility and connect them to advocacy resources as needed.
  • Obtain patient or family member signatures for consent to treatment and financial responsibility, following HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Confirm and verify insurance benefits with carriers via online verification systems or telephone inquiries.
  • Promote the MyUPMC patient portal and assist patients with registration when applicable.
  • Collect copayments and other patient payments at the point of service.
  • Provide a warm greeting to all patients and register them in the Biometrics program, explaining its benefits.
  • Confirm and update patient registration information at checkout.
  • Distribute and triage phone calls to other areas and clinical providers.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  • Experience with personal computer-based applications, office equipment, and proficient typing skills are preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a medical, billing, fiscal, or customer service function is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
