Job Summary

The Dual, OR Specialty Nurse acts as a Coordinator and serves as the clinical authority for the OR service line. This role ensures prompt, safe, and effective care for surgical patients in collaboration with the surgical team, facilitating effective communication with staff, surgeons, anesthesia, ancillary departments, and leadership. The nurse anticipates the needs of individual patients and surgeons, providing daily oversight of staff assigned to specialty procedure rooms. The Dual, OR Specialty Nurse routinely assesses and implements systems to enhance service line quality and acts as a liaison among physicians, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams. This position involves triaging patients based on acuity in collaboration with surgical and anesthesia colleagues, making staffing decisions based on licensure, competency, availability, and patient acuity. Timely communication of relevant information is essential to improve patient care. The nurse is a professional member of PNGC, providing feedback on issues discussed in meetings and participating in PNGC councils as appropriate. Actively involved in Unit Council, the nurse contributes to plans aimed at improving nursing-sensitive indicators, patient experience data, and quality metrics. The role promotes a positive work culture and accountability that reflects professional nursing practice.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Must be licensed to practice as a RN in Georgia. National certification in a clinical specialty within two (2) years of hire is required (CNOR preferred).
  • Educational Requirements: Associate's Degree.
  • Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the Operating Room, with the ability to precept and circulate.
  • Other: Membership in a professional organization within three months of hire into the role.

Essential Tasks And Responsibilities

  • Promotes quality and professional nursing care by holding staff accountable and assessing performance. Assists the Nurse Manager in staff performance evaluations and actively seeks mentoring opportunities.
  • Ensures availability of equipment, supplies, and resources for optimal patient care. Coordinates the availability of specialty items for scheduled cases and verifies that all necessary supplies are prepared for assigned procedures ahead of time.
  • Promotes fiscal responsibility by identifying future capital equipment needs or replacements and cost-saving initiatives. Monitors equipment needs and repairs while implementing process changes to decrease repair costs.
  • Develops relationships by participating in Perioperative Services committees, communicating challenges, and initiating improvements. Acts as a liaison among physicians, anesthesiology, vendors, staff members, and leadership.
  • Facilitates the development of personnel competency within the service line by identifying ongoing training needs and preparing performance-oriented training programs for both current and new staff.

  • Ensures regulatory compliance by collaborating with various departments to maintain prescribed levels of sterile and nonsterile specialty supplies and equipment.
  • Provides quality service by demonstrating competence in circulating all major procedures within surgical services.
  • Assists in developing staff assignments based on patient acuity and staff competency levels, collaborating with the Nurse Manager to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Acts as a professional and clinical resource, maintaining confidentiality and role modeling professional behavior in communications and demeanor.
