Position Overview:


The Cost Estimator plays a crucial role within the estimating department, tasked with the financial assessment of both private and public commercial construction projects.

This position entails the formulation of precise quotes, bids, and proposals, as well as the evaluation of bid packages prior to dissemination, ensuring that all bids are both accurate and competitive while overseeing the complete bidding process.

The estimator collaborates closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients to produce highly detailed and accurate proposals, where company overhead is consistently calculated based on financial metrics, and profit margins are influenced by various project-specific factors.

Project expenditures are regularly reviewed to ensure that actual costs provide valuable feedback to the estimating team, allowing for adjustments based on financial evaluations of projects.


Key Duties:

1) Project Evaluation:
Ø Analyze and interpret project drawings, specifications, and other documentation to comprehend the work scope.

Ø Conduct site inspections to collect pertinent information and evaluate project conditions.

2) Cost and Bid Preparation:
Ø Generate detailed and precise cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.

Ø Establish and maintain cost databases, historical data, and unit pricing for competitive bidding.

3) Team Collaboration:
Ø Partner with project managers, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive and accurate estimates.

Ø Participate in pre-bid meetings as necessary.

4) Risk Assessment:
Ø Identify potential risks and opportunities linked to project estimates and suggest mitigation strategies.

Ø Ensure adherence to company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

5) Documentation and Reporting:
Ø Maintain organized and accurate records of all estimates, proposals, and related documentation.

Ø Prepare regular reports on estimating activities and project progress for management review.

6) Physical Requirements:
Ø Capability to perform site visits, including climbing ladders, traversing uneven terrain, and working in various weather conditions.

Ø Extended periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

7) Work Environment:
Ø Office setting with occasional travel to project sites.

Requirements

Candidate Qualifications:

Ø Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.

Ø Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years in commercial construction estimating.

Ø Proficiency in takeoff software (e.g., On-screen Takeoff, FastPipe, FastDuct, Bluebeam, PlanSwift) is preferred.

Ø Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Quick Bid, Heavy Bid, Stack, etc.). Note that Excel experience is not considered relevant for this role.

Ø Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and transition between them without compromising accuracy.

Ø Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to lead and collaborate effectively in a team setting.

Ø Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

Ø Capacity to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Ø Willingness to work overtime and under pressure to meet tight bidding deadlines, with work weeks potentially exceeding 40 hours.

Preferred Candidate Attributes:
Ø Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar credential.

Ø Experience in mechanical estimating.

Ø Background in private sector estimating.

Ø 2-5 years of field experience.

Ø Familiarity with vertical commercial construction (office buildings, retail spaces, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions).

Ø Knowledge of local building codes and regulations.

Ø OSHA 30 certification obtained within the last five years or the ability to achieve certification/recertification before employment.
