Position Overview:
Are you passionate about advancing your career in veterinary medicine? We are seeking dedicated individuals, whether you are an experienced Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or a recent graduate eligible for certification within the next year. This role is essential in supporting the dynamic environment of our Emergency and Critical Care units at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's veterinary teaching hospital.

Key Responsibilities:
This position encompasses a variety of technical duties to meet the 24/7 demands of our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) units. Your contributions will significantly impact the lives of our patients and their owners. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with various hospital departments to coordinate emergency patient care.
  • Providing comprehensive nursing care for patients in the critical care unit.
  • Assisting with the placement of intravenous and urinary catheters.
  • Managing pharmaceutical requests for hospitalized patients during after-hours.
  • Conducting radiographic procedures for patients after-hours.
  • Supporting sedation and anesthesia processes for ECC patients.
  • Facilitating effective communication with clients and documenting interactions in patient logs.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely entry of charges for hospital services.
  • Collecting and submitting laboratory samples for patient diagnostics.
  • Adhering to all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Gaining proficiency in unit equipment operation and maintenance, reporting any issues to supervisors.
  • Participating in on-call shifts as required.
  • Assisting in the training and mentorship of less experienced staff and students.
  • Prioritizing and stabilizing patients effectively.
  • Maintaining a positive and collaborative attitude within the team.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a critical care or emergency veterinary setting.
  • Strong technical and communication skills, with the ability to triage effectively.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in high-pressure situations.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs independently and perform specialized technical tasks.

Educational Requirements:
Required: High School Diploma
Preferred: Associate's Degree in a related field

Licensure:
Preferred: Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT) or eligibility for licensure within 12 months.

Work Schedule:
This full-time position typically requires availability during weekdays and alternating weekends, including holidays and on-call shifts.
