Overview:

The Radiology Technician Extern I plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional care to patients by producing high-quality radiographic images, including various anatomical views, under the supervision of a Radiologist and Radiology Technologist. This position is essential in maintaining an efficient workflow and assisting in portable examinations and fluoroscopy procedures. Additional responsibilities include clerical tasks such as answering calls and entering data into the system, as well as transporting patients to and from the imaging area. The role also involves light housekeeping duties and ensuring that supplies and linens are adequately stocked.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Possesses a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, positioning, and the principles of radiographic imaging for authorized procedures.

• Implements universal precautions and standard infection control protocols with each patient, ensuring proper disposal of all contaminated supplies and linens immediately after use. Maintains the cleanliness and sterility of equipment and supplies used during procedures, ensuring that all areas are sanitized post-examination.

• Ensures accurate patient identification by consistently verifying ID bracelets and identifiers before conducting exams.

• Follows departmental protocols for patient transport, ensuring safety measures such as side rails and privacy coverings are in place, while also prioritizing patient dignity and comfort.

• Introduces self to patients, explains procedures, and addresses any wait times, treating each individual with respect and compassion. Responsible for documenting necessary medical history, confirming patient consent, and preparing the examination room and equipment.

• Prepares images for review by processing and sending them to PACS within 30 minutes of completion, ensuring timely access for radiologists.

• Maintains a steady workflow to ensure the department operates smoothly, providing timely patient care and maximizing productivity while upholding quality standards.

• Accurately records all examinations in RIS and PACS immediately after completion, ensuring that no credits or cancellations are entered without supervisor approval.

• Conducts patient assessments before, during, and after procedures.

• Completes all duties by the end of the shift, ensuring that images are ready for review, rooms are cleaned and restocked, and all documentation is finalized.

• Assists technologists in moving and preparing patients for examinations, including portable studies.

• Engages in effective communication by reviewing departmental emails and reporting any issues to supervisors.

• Complies with regulations set forth by CMS, TJC, ACR, and TDSHS, reporting any violations to the department supervisor.

• Demonstrates responsible use of hospital property, adhering to manufacturer instructions, promptly reporting any issues, and maintaining cleanliness of equipment after use.

• Follows hospital policies regarding attendance, appearance, safety, in-service programs, infection control, and departmental regulations.

• Upholds the CHRISTUS Health Guidelines related to HIPAA, ensuring the protection of patient information.

• Completes all required educational assignments in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; currently enrolled in an accredited Radiology Technology program.
  • Previous experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification is required.
  • TMB Non-Certified Radiology Technician status is required.
