Summary:

The Senior Grant Accountant is responsible for delivering financial and accounting services to the various programs and grants associated with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington.

This role oversees the Grant Accountant, collaborates closely with the Finance team, and reports directly to the Controller.

The Senior Grant Accountant should possess experience in overseeing a portfolio of charitable initiatives funded through diverse revenue streams, including grants, contracts, donor contributions, restricted donations, and service fees.

This position requires handling sensitive information, necessitating discretion, diplomacy, and a high degree of professionalism.

Key relationships include the CFO, Directors, Program Directors, administrative finance office personnel, Diocesan accounting staff, grantors, and the broader community.

The Senior Grant Accountant is involved in program and grant budget oversight, preparing journal entries for monthly financial reports, generating monthly grant invoices, ensuring policy and program compliance, and managing grant administration.


Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare monthly journal entries for internal program and contract/grant financial statements in a timely manner.
• Review monthly journals prepared by the Grant Accountant for accuracy before posting.
• Prepare and review grant billing invoices or financial reports for various State and Locally funded grant programs. Monitor account balances and assist program directors with grant oversight and compliance.
• Review Migration and Refugee Services Federal and State grant billings and submissions, ensuring compliance. Assess supporting documents and schedules prepared by finance staff for billing.

• Support the year-end accounting close process and aid in the preparation of internal and external financial statements for stakeholders.

• Provide lead audit support to the Controller and CFO during the annual audit process.
• Conduct trial balance account reviews, perform account reconciliations, and report findings to the Controller. Investigate and recommend adjustments to budgets and billings.
• Analyze program budgets and report on spending trends, identifying opportunities for cost savings and financial management enhancements.
• Lead the Fiscal Year Budget formation and Budget Narrative processes with Programs each fiscal year cycle. Coordinate and update compensation analysis and trends for agency planning and development.
• Collaborate closely with Program Directors on the management of grant and donor-restricted funds.
• Design, propose, and implement improvements to internal controls at the program level. Conduct training sessions in the field to enhance compliance and financial administration knowledge.
• Adhere to all weekly and monthly accounting deadlines.
• Assist with staff meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
• Provide backup support to the AP team for EA and MRS check run processing.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Demonstrate commitment to the mission, goals, and services of Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required.
CPA designation is preferred but not mandatory.
Minimum of five years of relevant experience in accounting, contract management, and grant processing (billing and reporting).
Proficiency in MS Excel is essential. Strong skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat are also required.
Experience with accounting databases or related software is necessary.
Excellent organizational and administrative capabilities are crucial.
Knowledge of US GAAP accounting principles is advantageous.

Experience with budgeting and the ability to assist in budget management, including oversight of credit cards, purchase orders, and other budget-related expenses.

Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in a non-profit setting or with federal and state contracting.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, multi-cultural environment are essential.

Must be a collaborative team player and capable of working independently.
Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment are required.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, regional, and local agencies, churches, community leaders, and the general public.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
Understanding of the Catholic faith and alignment with Catholic values is expected.
