Position Summary

This role is pivotal in establishing priorities and objectives for managing daily media interactions, crisis communications, and communication challenges for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, specifically focusing on the Minnesota State Patrol.

The individual in this position will serve as a strategic communications authority, responsible for crafting messages and disseminating information regarding public safety matters and services to the public, as well as to state, national, and international media outlets, particularly in sensitive or critical situations. Additionally, this role acts as a senior communications consultant for designated divisions and programs, and for the Department of Public Safety as needed.

The responsibilities include overseeing crisis communications and developing, implementing, and sustaining media and communication strategies for the Department of Public Safety. This position is essential for enhancing the reputation of the assigned divisions and programs, managing the impact of critical issues, and ensuring the public is informed about vital information from these divisions.

Furthermore, this role will set priorities and manage strategic direction for assigned divisions and programs to promote and enhance the image, objectives, mission, and vision of the Department of Public Safety. The individual will also design and execute comprehensive communication plans that effectively reach a broad audience across Minnesota.

This position is tasked with managing media and communication strategies while recommending the effective use of social media and digital platforms to maximize outreach for the messaging of assigned divisions and programs. Collaboration with the deputy communications director, communications director, and division leadership is crucial, as this role serves as their strategic communications advisor.

Telework Availability: Yes - up to three days a week, based on the operational needs of the State Patrol division.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in strategic communication planning and crisis management, ideally within law enforcement and public safety.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a solid understanding of journalistic standards and AP style.
  • Strong research capabilities and the ability to simplify complex topics into engaging and accessible content.
  • Familiarity with both traditional and social media, including earned and paid media strategies.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

*A Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in recommending or implementing communication strategies for community engagement and outreach.
  • Knowledge of photography, videography, and graphic design.

Physical Requirements

This role may require occasional movement and transportation of items such as file folders and small tools. The individual may need to maintain a stationary position for extended periods while performing job duties.
