Medical Laboratory Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team at Island Health. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in laboratory specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting.
Key Responsibilities- Quality Control and Assurance: Perform procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance according to laboratory protocols.
- Test Performance and Result Reporting: Conduct laboratory specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting in the clinical departments of the laboratory.
- Customer Satisfaction: Strive to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction through activities and interaction with customers.
- Work Environment: Work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, exposed to indoor environmental conditions, and potentially exposed to dust, pollens, pollutants, fumes, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a healthcare environment.
- Education: Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent.
- Experience: One year of experience working in a clinical laboratory, preferably with automated/semi-automated instrumentation and manual procedures.
- Certifications: MLT certification preferred or proof of qualification to sit for examination within 6 months. Certified by the State of Washington as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) and current Basic Life Support certification.
The work of this position is performed inside, exposing the employee to indoor environmental conditions, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The employee may be exposed to dust, pollens, pollutants, fumes, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a healthcare environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time; push, pull, and reach; occasionally bend, sit, stoop, and stretch. The employee will need full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients, should have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and medical equipment. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports are required; specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
