The University of Utah is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Senior Accountant to join our Tax Services department. This role is pivotal in managing federal tax documentation related to international payments and ensuring compliance with complex tax regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and submit federal tax forms accurately and timely.
- Manage tax withholding deposits for foreign payments and adhere to strict payroll reporting deadlines.
- Conduct interviews with international students, faculty, and researchers to assess tax status and applicable treaty benefits.
- Review and authorize foreign payments utilizing tax compliance software.
- Oversee the tax reporting processes for IRS forms 1042-S and 1099.
- Perform general ledger reconciliations and process journal entries to rectify discrepancies.
- Engage with external agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, regarding assigned responsibilities.
- Interpret and communicate University policies to stakeholders effectively.
- Contribute to various departmental projects and tasks as assigned.
Problem Solving:
This role requires the ability to navigate complex tax scenarios and recommend adjustments to policies and procedures when necessary. While some decisions may follow established guidelines, the Senior Accountant will utilize professional judgment to resolve issues.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, along with two years of relevant professional experience. A comprehensive understanding of accounting principles, proficiency in accounting software, and advanced spreadsheet capabilities are essential. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are also required. Certifications such as Certified Public Accountant may be advantageous for certain roles.
