Job Overview

Position Title: Patient Care Assistant

PRIMARY ROLE: To deliver comprehensive perioperative support to individuals undergoing medical procedures, under the supervision of registered nurses and surgeons at Spectrum Vision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pre-Operative Duties:

  1. Welcome and confirm patient identity.
  2. Guide patients to the preoperative area to validate medical history and preoperative information, including vital signs, date of birth, surgical site, and medication details.
  3. Notify nursing staff or anesthesiologist of any irregular vital signs, level of consciousness, or non-compliance with fasting instructions.
  4. Ensure proper consent signatures for procedures are obtained.
  5. Mark the surgical site accurately after verification with the patient and medical records.
  6. Confirm patient identity and date of birth, and apply identification bands.
  7. Assist patients in donning surgical gowns, caps, and booties.
  8. Support staff as required.
  9. Contribute to preoperative preparations as necessary.
  10. Complete continuing education units as mandated.
  11. Assist in sanitizing all surfaces and equipment using appropriate germicidal wipes.
  12. Replace sharps containers as necessary.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities:

  1. Support patients and nursing personnel in transferring to the operating room, positioning them appropriately and applying monitors.
  2. Prepare the operating room by disinfecting all surfaces and equipment.
  3. Assist in the handling, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instruments, provided training has been completed and continuing education units specific to sterile processing are maintained.
  4. Ensure cleanliness of surfaces and monitors in the operating room between procedures.
  5. Facilitate the turnover of the operating room.
  6. Help transfer patients to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  7. Dispose of waste at the conclusion of surgeries and at the end of the day.
  8. Assist in restocking the operating room at the end of the surgical day.
  9. Replace sharps containers as required.
  10. Support the wrapping of instruments for sterilization.
  11. Contribute to the cleaning of the sterilization area at the end of the day or surgical week.
  12. Provide assistance with Femto Laser and scrub support as needed.

Post-Operative Duties:

  1. Welcome and identify patients upon their arrival to the PACU.
  2. Assist patients in removing surgical gowns, hats, and booties.
  3. Apply monitors and report any abnormalities in vital signs or consciousness levels to nursing staff or anesthesiologist.
  4. Provide nourishment to patients as required.
  5. Assist nursing staff as necessary.
  6. Accompany patients and their designated support persons to the exit.
  7. Disinfect chairs, tables, and monitors with germicidal wipes upon patient discharge.
  8. Contribute to preoperative preparations as needed.
  9. Manage laundry as necessary.
  10. Ensure the blanket warmer is stocked.
  11. Complete continuing education units as required.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  1. Organize and compile patient charts, including obtaining medical histories and clearances from medical offices.
  2. File and maintain charts and paperwork as needed.
  3. Retrieve charts for peer reviews or other requirements.
  4. Assemble necessary documentation packets.
  5. Restock supplies in all restrooms.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  1. Assist medical doctors, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses as required.
  2. Support in both routine and emergency situations.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED); Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Multi-Skilled Technician program. Continuing education units as mandated by the Infection Control Liaison.
