Job Summary

Polar Tankers, a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips, provides marine transportation services for North Slope production. The company operates five double-hulled tankers, delivering oil from Valdez, Alaska, to refineries on the West Coast of the United States.

Job Description

This is a Safety Sensitive position. The Utility Person will be assigned to work in the Deck, Engine, and Steward Department, as needed. Responsibilities may include:

  • Cleaning decks and ladder ways
  • Replenishing materials and rag bins, emptying trash, organizing tools and stores, painting, and assisting with maintenance
  • Familiarizing with engine room spaces to avoid hazards and taking necessary action in emergency situations
  • Learning plant and machinery operation
  • Participating in maintenance and upkeep

When assigned to the deck department, responsibilities may include:

  • Performing sanitation duties in the house, passage spaces, common areas, and heads
  • Assisting with mooring lines when docking and undocking, and securing the deck for sea
  • Assisting with cargo operations
  • Assisting the deck department in maintenance and upkeep of assigned areas and equipment
  • Performing lookout duties when arriving or departing a port, or whenever required by the Master
Qualifications

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Currently hold, or have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to obtain, a U.S. Passport
  • Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following:
  • Be away from home for periods in excess of two months
  • Push/pull up to 200 pounds
  • Lift/carry up to 100 pounds floor to shoulder
  • Lift from floor to overhead and transport articles weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Climb various ladders and stairs ranging from 5 to 200 feet in height
  • Perform maintenance on equipment
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Physically attend to vessels, including confined space entry and environmental extremes
  • Walk, stand, stoop, sit, climb, and carry material on a daily basis on even and uneven terrain
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Work alone a high percentage of the time

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of experience working on a crude oil tanker
  • 1+ years of experience working on a product tanker
  • 1+ years of experience in operating a mechanical winch
  • 1+ years of experience in operating a crane
  • Currently hold the following endorsements on Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC):
  • Able Seafarer-Engine
  • Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch (RFPEW)
  • Qualified Member of the Engine Department QMED
  • Able Seafarer - Deck
  • Basic Oil Tanker Cargo Operations endorsement (not barges)
  • Basic Training endorsement
  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties endorsement (VPDSD)
  • Security Awareness endorsement
  • Ordinary Seaman endorsement
  • Wiper endorsement
  • Steward's Department Food Handler (FH) endorsement
  • Tankerman Assistant endorsements (not barges)
  • RFPNW training course completion or endorsement
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to work overtime
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Organized, efficient, and have problem-solving skills
  • Ability to clearly follow instructions, both written and verbal
