Job Summary

To provide comprehensive eye care services to patients, including examining patients with a full range of visual problems, diagnosing visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing treatment as licensed and credited.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine patients using a full field of optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies and prescribe treatment according to laws and regulations.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses.
  • Determine visual requirements of partially sighted patients.
  • Prescribe low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology.
  • Use examination techniques to determine ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications.
  • Refer patients to other appropriate providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities.
  • Consult with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
  • Assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.
  • Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date.
  • Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia).
  • Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association.
  • National Provider Identifier required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred or successful completion of accredited residency program.
  • Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
