POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general oversight, the Safety and Security Specialist is responsible for maintaining a secure environment for employees, visitors, and various stakeholders within the organization’s facilities and properties.
This role emphasizes exceptional customer service while ensuring physical security through regular patrols and traffic management, responding to incidents such as injuries or medical emergencies.
Acts as the primary security contact until emergency services arrive or transport individuals to medical facilities. Rotates through various locations to remain familiar with duties and responsibilities across the organization. Performs additional related tasks as necessary.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts patrols of assigned areas on foot or using organization-provided vehicles, including cars, bicycles, or other approved modes of transport.
Performs routine inspections of buildings and grounds, checking doors, vehicles, equipment, windows, and perimeter barriers. Monitors security systems to ensure functionality and identify any security breaches. Engages in proactive surveillance and timely responses to potential or actual security threats. Operates and responds to alarms and closed-circuit television systems.Observes and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, safety issues, and security concerns. Ensures that all entry points are secured.
Documents unusual circumstances or problems and reports them to the appropriate authorities, including law enforcement and fire departments, as well as facility management.
May take action during emergencies, including administering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and may utilize an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).Provides emergency response and general assistance across all facilities. Responds to alarms and investigates incidents and accidents. May act as a liaison with law enforcement or other emergency response teams regarding shared concerns.
Investigates disturbances and, in emergencies, helps maintain order and safety while prioritizing personal safety. Welcomes visitors and provides both general and specific information. Responds to inquiries during non-business hours or when administrative offices are closed. Manages access to security gates and doors at designated times.
Operates scales and related processes.
Promptly reports security vulnerabilities such as damaged fencing, inoperative security lights, unsecured equipment, and inadequately secured high-value items.
Monitors and authorizes the entry and exit of employees, visitors, and other individuals to prevent theft and unauthorized access. Maintains sign-in/out logs and conducts inspections of bags and vehicles.May direct crowds at events and oversee the delivery and collection of equipment and other items.
Prepares reports and compiles all relevant information. Adheres to standard operating procedures and established protocols.
May provide security training to employees, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Delivers correspondence and transports employees for health assessments related to substance testing and minor injuries.
Offers minor vehicle assistance, such as battery jumps and lockouts.
Adheres to safe work practices.
Must engage in ongoing education required to maintain peace officer certification, as well as all department or organizational training mandates.
Performs other related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent certification.
EXPERIENCE
No prior experience is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
AGE REQUIREMENT
Must be at least 21 years of age.
CERTIFICATIONS
Must hold a current and valid peace officer certification in the State of Ohio, verified through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA).
Must be certified and capable of carrying and maintaining a District-issued firearm.
Must possess a certificate in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/AED or be able to obtain certification within ninety (90) days of employment.
Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license with a driving record that meets the organization’s standards.
ASSESSMENTS AND EVALUATIONSCandidates will be required to undergo pre-employment assessments, which may include a written test, physical agility test, psychological evaluation, background check, in-person interview, and medical examination.
Criminal convictions involving violence, theft, or sexual offenses, or any convictions that may impede job performance, may disqualify candidates.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Must possess knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, strong understanding of security protocols, customer service principles, and public safety operations.
Must demonstrate effective leadership abilities while fostering teamwork and building relationships.Must be able to analyze situations, exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, exhibit organizational skills, and utilize computer skills to interpret data and provide accurate information.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to perform essential functions, including comparing, compiling, coordinating, and negotiating.
Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential. The role requires physical activity, including standing or sitting for extended periods, walking, climbing, and managing various physical tasks.May involve crawling, crouching, kneeling, and running in response to incidents. Must be able to wear protective gear weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds regularly.
In rare circumstances, may need to push or pull weights exceeding one hundred (100) pounds if necessary.Position requires visual acuity for near and far distances, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to accommodate visual demands. The role is primarily conducted outside of a traditional office environment.
May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, hazards, and confined spaces.Must be available to work rotating 12-hour shifts, with the possibility of mandatory overtime.
