Job Summary

The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) seeks a highly skilled and experienced Senior Psychometric Director to lead the operational and strategic psychometric efforts across our suite of products, services, and programs. This role will be critical in ensuring the validity, reliability, and fairness of NCBE's assessments, including the development of the NextGen Bar Exam.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all psychometric activities related to NCBE's existing products, services, and programs, ensuring high standards for test quality, including measurement precision, fairness, and legal defensibility.
  • Lead the psychometric design and development of the NextGen Bar Exam, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the exam meets its goals for innovation, equity, and competence in the legal profession.
  • Drive R&D efforts to explore and implement cutting-edge psychometric methodologies and technologies in legal assessment, identifying opportunities for innovation in test design, scaling, scoring, and analysis.
  • Provide psychometric guidance on data analysis, including differential item functioning (DIF), validity, and reliability studies, and lead the exploration of new statistical models that advance the fairness and efficacy of NCBE assessments.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to embed psychometric rigor into every phase of product development and delivery, serving as a thought leader within NCBE and the broader legal licensure community.
  • Proactively assess and refine operational processes, ensuring psychometric practices evolve with new technologies and best practices in measurement science.
  • Present psychometric findings, insights, and recommendations to internal stakeholders, external partners, and regulatory bodies, communicating complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to internal teams, including psychometricians, analysts, and other assessment professionals, ensuring the development of strong psychometric expertise across NCBE.
  • Ensure all psychometric processes meet legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, including adherence to the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing and other relevant guidelines.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Psychometrics, Educational Measurement, Statistics, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in psychometrics, with a focus on large-scale assessments or licensure/certification exams.
  • Demonstrated expertise in psychometric theory, test development, item response theory (IRT), classical test theory (CTT), scaling, and equating.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading psychometric operations and research within complex testing programs.
  • Experience with legal or professional licensure assessments is a strong plus.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical psychometric concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Python, SAS, or equivalent) for data analysis, psychometric modeling, and simulation studies.
  • Experience with research and development of adaptive testing, automated scoring, and other innovative psychometric techniques to improve assessment accuracy and efficiency.
  • A passion for advancing fairness, innovation, and excellence in the legal profession through high-quality assessments.

This position may include up to 25% travel. Travel may include meetings with technical advisory boards and NCBE committees, product team, and other functional groups throughout the organization. The Senior Psychometric Director may work remotely. NCBE will consider applicants from the following states: FL, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, MN, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, OK, PA, TX, WA, WI, and WY.

The expected salary for this role ranges from $225,000-$275,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. We are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, and the final offer will be based on relevant skills and experience.
