As a non-profit entity, MIDCONTINENT INDEPENDENT SYSTEM OPERATOR INC is dedicated to the reliable and efficient management of the wholesale electric grid across central North America. In your role as an Operations Technology Engineer, you will be integral to our Operations Technology (OT) team, which oversees the core functionalities of the electrical grid. This team delivers engineering support for our Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA, Synchrophasor, and other critical reliability applications that monitor and control the bulk electric system. These advanced tools gather and analyze over 200,000 data points to evaluate the health of the electrical grid, enabling our operations team to respond effectively to unforeseen events such as severe weather.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Enhancing and maintaining the EMS platform (GE E-Terra AEMS)
  • Addressing complex engineering challenges to support the EMS platform
  • Developing software solutions to optimize decision-making in the control room
  • Collaborating with operators and engineers to uphold grid reliability
  • Engaging in strategic initiatives to keep our EMS and reliability applications up-to-date and secure, in compliance with industry standards
  • Preparing for the evolving demands of the electric industry
  • Supporting the EMS Training and Simulation environment

Success in this role will be evident within a year if you gain a comprehensive understanding of how EMS and reliability tools synergize to support control room operations, engage with our vendors to set strategic direction, and enhance our reliability software suite.

We seek talented individuals who possess:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields:
    1. Electrical Engineering
    2. Computer Engineering
    3. Electrical Engineering Technology
    4. Electrical and Computer Engineering
    5. Electrical and Electronic Engineering
    6. Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology
  • At least two years of relevant experience in power system engineering, electric wholesale markets, electric transmission planning, power flow studies, IIOT/SCADA, EMS Training and Simulation, or utility operations

Preferred qualifications include experience with:

  • Energy Management System (EMS)
  • C++ and/or Python programming and scripting
  • Utility SCADA systems

The appropriate level for this position will be determined based on your experience and expertise.
