Compensation: $32.06 IUOE Union

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling major components of internal combustion vehicles, including cars, buses, trucks, and tractors. The role encompasses various tasks such as identifying issues, determining repair needs, replacing damaged parts like piston rings and bearings, grinding and adjusting valves, rebuilding carburetors, overhauling transmissions, and fixing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. This position typically requires comprehensive training and experience, often gained through formal apprenticeship programs or equivalent experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures equipment readiness by inspecting and testing vehicles; performing preventive maintenance tasks such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Maintains vehicle functionality by addressing operator concerns; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; and fixing mechanical and electrical system issues.
  • Confirms vehicle serviceability through test drives and adjustments of controls and systems.
  • Adheres to state vehicle regulations by testing engine performance, safety, and emissions standards.
  • Enhances vehicle appearance through cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Documents vehicle service and repairs to maintain accurate records.
  • Ensures shop equipment operates effectively by following operational guidelines; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Manages inventory by monitoring stock levels; placing orders; and verifying deliveries.
  • Enhances job knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities and reviewing technical literature.
  • Achieves maintenance and organizational goals by completing related tasks as necessary.

Additional Responsibilities:

Handles GSA calls for repair approvals and submits purchase requisitions to the material expeditor. Operates shop equipment safely and performs other assigned duties as required.

Qualifications:

Essential Skills: Lifting, energy management, reliability, persistence, time management, attendance, independence, safety management, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Candidates must provide their own tools for the job.

Certifications:

  • ASE Certification
  • Forklift Operator Certification
  • NAVFAC P300

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting: Up to 50 lbs, 25% of the time
  • Climbing: Occasionally required for repairs and inspections
  • Crawling: Occasionally required for repairs and inspections
  • Protective Equipment: Slip-resistant shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection required at all times
  • Physical Activity: Sitting (50%), Standing (75%), Bending (25%), Stooping (25%)
  • Noise Exposure: Possible exposure to high noise levels in the work environment, 25% of the time

Work Environment:

  • Work is conducted in an outside and open bay shop as well as an indoor office environment, 100% of the time
  • Temperature Conditions: Not extreme but requires outdoor work
  • Hazardous Conditions: Exposure to test equipment, 25% of the time
  • Travel Requirements: May involve occasional local travel, 25% of the time

Equipment Utilized:

  • Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, copiers, and telephones, 25% of the time
  • Vehicles and forklifts, 25% of the time
  • Tools used in the trade including shop equipment, tire changers, balancers, brake lathes, vehicle lifts, jacks, and hand tools, 75% of the time

Attendance Requirements:

  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with potential weekend shifts for sign-offs, 100% of the time
  • Shift: Day shift
  • Regular attendance is critical, 100% of the time
  • Punctuality is essential, 100% of the time
  • Work hours typically consist of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Regular attendance and punctuality are crucial, with flexibility required for weekend repair needs.

Other Essential Functions:

Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, health performance evaluation, and background check. Professional behavior is expected at all times when interacting with customers, management, and colleagues. Clear and effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are required. Appropriate grooming and attire must be maintained to ensure safety and professionalism. Dependable personal transportation to the work site is necessary.
