Childcare Support Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
The Childcare Support Specialist will collaborate with the school age team to design and execute age-appropriate educational activities that foster holistic development in children. This role emphasizes the importance of social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language growth while ensuring a safe and nurturing environment. Engaging families and building strong community ties are also key components of this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the Suburban/SMOC Child Care philosophy along with all relevant regulations and performance standards.
- Assist the classroom team in creating and implementing an enriching learning atmosphere that promotes each child's growth.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, sharing essential information promptly.
- Observe and document children's behaviors to assess their skills and tailor activities to meet individual and group needs. Identify concerns and participate in necessary interventions or referrals.
- Evaluate classroom requirements for materials and equipment, reporting findings to the lead teacher or supervisor.
- Ensure that the learning environment, including space and materials, is maintained in a safe and organized manner.
- Provide timely and accurate documentation and reports as required for the classroom.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols.
- Participate in all mandatory meetings, training sessions, and community events.
- Foster positive relationships with families through regular communication and involvement opportunities.
- Act as a mandated reporter, ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and be aware of children's whereabouts at all times.
- Work under the direct supervision of a Group Leader or higher at all times.
- Supervise children actively during all activities.
- Participate in mandated reporter training.
- Address the needs of children and families, both within and outside the scope of work.
- Engage in team meetings and communicate effectively with colleagues across different areas.
- Uphold confidentiality regarding program, employee, and agency information as per legal requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all program, agency, and funder standards and policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Prior experience working with school-age children is preferred.
- Exhibit patience and the ability to follow instructions.
- Serve as a positive role model for younger children.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- This position reports directly to Group Leaders and School Age Program Directors.
- No direct reports are associated with this role.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift children weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Must provide proof of a physical examination within the last year confirming good health and compliance with EEC requirements.
- Must be physically capable of performing CPR, including getting on the floor and administering effective breaths and chest compressions.
- COVID-19 vaccination is strongly encouraged.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role involves working both indoors and outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. The Childcare Support Specialist will have direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC across various programs. A successful background check is required.
