Medical Laboratory Specialist

This Medical Laboratory Specialist position is located in the Blood Donor Processing department at Children's National Hospital, a leading pediatric healthcare provider. The successful candidate will be responsible for the manufacturing, quality control testing, labeling, and distribution of blood and blood components collected from donors participating in the hospital's blood donor program.

The Medical Laboratory Specialist will perform routine laboratory tests, record and report results according to established procedures. They will set up and maintain equipment, monitor quality control standards, and perform routine clerical and service duties as required. Duties may vary according to assigned area or shift.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Vocational Education: Completion of a 2-year (or greater) vocational/technical training program (Required)
  • Associate's Degree (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Functional Accountabilities: Technical and Reporting Skills
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine technical procedures as assigned following standard operation protocols
  • Report test results in writing, orally, and/or by computer according to established procedures
  • Document and maintain results records
  • Verify test results performed by Laboratory Associates before release when technologists are not available
Performance Checks
  • Operate instruments, perform performance checks, calibration, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting following written guidelines
  • Identify problems and notify technologists of unresolved problems
Problem Solving
  • Identify technical and patient-related problems or discrepancies
  • Resolve problems with technologist's assistance and document resolution
  • Perform and report QC procedures
  • Identify QC failures
Safety
  • Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication

  • Store and preserve specimens
  • Assist with monitoring supply inventories; receive and stock supplies
  • Collect blood specimens from patients by venipuncture and capillary method
