Senior Medical Technologist Job Description

Howard University Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Senior Medical Technologist to join our Core lab team on Days. As a Senior Medical Technologist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the hospital's mission of delivering exceptional healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients, collaborating with interdisciplinary staff to achieve patient care goals.
  • Participate in educational offerings and present as requested, sharing expertise with colleagues and students.
  • Interact with pathologists, clinicians, laboratory staff, residents, and students to provide assistance and support during laboratory testing and training sessions.
  • Perform Quality Control (QC) and complex patient testing, developing skills and maintaining competency in routine, "specials" and assigned laboratory areas.
  • Ensure error rate is consistent with established departmental standards, reporting and documenting critical and corrected values per medical laboratory policy.
  • Prioritize and manage workload to meet or exceed established Turn-Around-Times (TATs), maintaining competencies and new skills as technologies change.
  • Assess proper inventories and correctly use supplies and reagents, receiving, storing, and verifying reagents for quality prior to use, per departmental policy.
  • Utilize reagents and supplies according to manufacturer and/or procedural instructions, disposing of reagents and supplies in accordance with departmental safety guidelines.
  • Perform advanced equipment trouble-shooting and maintenance responsibilities.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related field, with a registry by the American Society of Pathologist (ASCP) (MT), (H/C), or an equivalent registry.
  • Four or more years of progressive work experience in an accredited laboratory.
