Clinical Laboratory Technician

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting routine and specialized laboratory analyses on patient samples, interpreting and correlating findings based on established methodologies and instrumentation. This role involves troubleshooting issues, performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, preparing necessary reagents, training new staff, and accurately entering and interpreting test results. The technician will independently apply laboratory techniques in executing test protocols while catering to the specific age demographics served by the department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts a variety of diagnostic laboratory tests on patient samples.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and principles.
- Prepares samples for analysis utilizing appropriate solutions, reagents, and stains.
- Processes samples in accordance with departmental protocols and executes tests as specified on requisition forms.
- Identifies abnormal or unexpected results and understands the factors that may influence test outcomes, taking appropriate follow-up actions.
- Completes testing in a timely manner, consistently meeting turnaround expectations.
- Records and communicates all results following established protocols.
- Assists with morgue responsibilities as required once deemed competent.
2. Demonstrates proficiency in the operation and principles of laboratory instruments.

· Conducts quality control and calibration for all testing processes, alerting supervisors to any quality control discrepancies.
· Adheres to quality control standards as outlined in procedural documentation.
· Accurately documents instrument maintenance and quality control results.
· Informs supervisors of any unexpected or out-of-control results.

- Follows personal protective equipment (PPE) policies, utilizing appropriate lab coats, gloves, and footwear during laboratory tasks.
Minimizes personal injury risks through proper specimen handling techniques and ergonomic practices.
- Maintains a clean and organized workspace.
- Remains vigilant to potential safety hazards, reporting incidents and accidents as necessary.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Attends a minimum number of departmental meetings annually.
- Participates in mandatory organizational meetings as required.
· Completes a specified number of continuing education units (CEUs) each year.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Must demonstrate sound judgment in the application, evaluation, and implementation of new or revised procedures and practices.
SPECIAL SKILLS, LICENSES, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the relevant state board.
HIPAA COMPLIANCE:
Maintains awareness of and adheres to all applicable HIPAA regulations relevant to the position.
SAFETY COMPLIANCE:
Maintains knowledge of and follows all safety practices relevant to the position, including incident reporting and proper handling of materials.
