Position Overview:

The University of Vermont Libraries is on the lookout for a knowledgeable and innovative librarian specializing in cataloging and metadata. This role is essential for providing original and intricate copy cataloging while leading the cataloging team within the UVM Libraries. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with library colleagues to establish effective cataloging practices and priorities, manage the creation and modification of records and metadata for both print and digital resources, and coordinate with consortial partners on shared cataloging initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage cataloging operations across the UVM Libraries, promoting teamwork within and between departments.
  • Set policies and priorities for cataloging and metadata creation.
  • Conduct original and complex copy cataloging for various formats, ensuring adherence to cataloging and classification standards.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance processes and appropriate workflows.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Boston Library Consortium to maintain consortial cataloging policies.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and ongoing education for cataloging staff.
  • Supervise a team of catalogers.
  • Engage with the Silver Special Collections Library to assess cataloging and metadata needs for various projects.
  • Participate in digitization initiatives to identify cataloging and metadata requirements.
  • Contribute to committees and service activities that support the mission of the Libraries and the University.
  • Develop a personal agenda for scholarly or creative activities with guidance from mentors.

Required Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent professional credential.
  • Experience as a full-time professional cataloger.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cataloging and metadata workflows.
  • Familiarity with cataloging standards such as MARC, RDA, and LCSH.
  • Proficiency with cataloging tools and resources.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience in leadership and training roles.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with serials and electronic resource management.
  • Knowledge of XML metadata transformation.
  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages.
  • Familiarity with Alma library services platform.
  • Experience in rare book cataloging or archival description.
  • Participation in PCC Programs.
