Role Responsibilities

As a Peer Recovery Specialist, your role will encompass:

  • Engaging proactively with families and individuals to facilitate access to and navigation of the substance use treatment system.
  • Providing group support centered on recovery, wellness, and coping strategies for individuals facing substance use disorders (SUD).
  • Assisting participants and families with:
  1. Developing personalized recovery service plans tailored to individual goals.
  2. Utilizing recovery-oriented tools to help participants overcome challenges.
  3. Creating self-directed wellness plans.
  4. Accessing benefits, legal assistance, civic restoration, transportation, health management, stable housing, and educational and employment resources.
  5. Supporting informed decision-making processes.
  6. Establishing and maintaining self-help and educational groups for participants and families.
  7. Providing emotional support and advocacy for individual needs.
  8. Offering crisis support and sharing personal recovery narratives.
Advocacy and Coordination

In this role, you will also:

  • Serve as a mentor, guiding individuals in self-advocacy and service coordination.
  • Respond to inquiries through various channels while maintaining a flexible schedule to meet consumer needs.
  • Coordinate activities that promote engagement, employment, self-management, and personal wellness.
  • Provide services through the Home and Community Based Service Waiver as required.
  • Stay informed about current systems issues affecting service delivery.
  • Engage in individual advocacy to protect and promote the rights of participants with substance use disorders.
  • Represent consumer concerns through systems advocacy, identifying patterns of issues and collaborating with administrators to address systemic challenges.
  • Network with other service providers to ensure an integrated support system for individuals with SUD.
  • Facilitate the development of a comprehensive support network, including case management, benefits advisement, supported housing, self-help, and educational services.
  • Maintain accurate database statistics and complete required reporting in a timely manner.
  • Participate actively in all training sessions and meetings relevant to your role.
Work Schedule

The position requires availability from Tuesday to Saturday, with specific hours outlined for each day.

Compensation and Benefits

The pay rate ranges from $22.55/hr to $23.45/hr, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • CRPA (Certified Recovery Peer Advocate) certification preferred.
  • Personal experience with substance use recovery or familiarity through a family member or friend.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, with additional experience in human services preferred.
  • Two years of peer coaching or advocacy experience.
  • Completion of approved advocacy training within the first six months of employment.
  • NYCPS (New York Certified Peer Specialist) certification is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of the recovery process and a commitment to promoting multiple pathways to recovery.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of ASL is a plus.
  • High personal standards, respect for diversity, and a commitment to the Independent Living philosophy.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
