Shift Schedule: Day Shift with Rotating Weekend Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Healthcare Support Specialist (HSS) is a versatile professional dedicated to assisting clinic operations under the direct guidance of the clinic Manager. HSS personnel are trained to address the physical and psychological needs of patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly, adhering to appropriate age-related protocols.

Ideal candidates should be self-driven, capable of working independently, and thrive in a collaborative environment. A solid understanding of medical terminology, equipment, medication management, and excellent interpersonal skills are essential for success in this role.


Key Responsibilities of the Healthcare Support Specialist

  • Conduct patient intake processes, including but not limited to: measuring height, weight, blood pressure, visual acuity, and color vision screening, while ensuring all documentation is accurately recorded in medical records for nurse visits, patient interactions, and medication refills.
  • Administer and document oral and injectable medications and vaccinations.
  • Prepare and manage electronic and faxed medication refill requests with precision.
  • Perform reception and clerical duties, including scheduling appointments, verifying insurance details, checking patients in, coordinating referrals, managing insurance medication prior authorizations, ordering supplies, and maintaining accurate documentation of communications and patient care.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and administration of vaccines, determining appropriate vaccines based on patient history, age, and CDC and MDH guidelines.
  • Execute and document Phlebotomy, EKGs, and waived laboratory tests.
  • Assist healthcare providers in continuing patient care by coordinating diagnostic tests and referrals to both internal and external specialists.
  • Participate in data collection for quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in various committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Provide training and create a supportive learning environment for students, externs, and new staff members.

Required Qualifications

  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Certification or registration from an accredited body such as the AAMA or ARMA (must successfully complete the Certified Medical Assistant exam within six months of hire) or possess a Minnesota practical nursing license.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles, policies, procedures, and medical ethics equivalent to relevant experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills across various disciplines and levels.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Word.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare or clinic settings.
  • Phlebotomy and laboratory experience.
  • X-Ray certification and/or relevant experience.
