Job Summary

Leacounty is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as Director of Detention Center. As a key member of the Assistant County Manager's leadership team, the Director will provide strategic guidance and oversight to ensure the safe and secure operation of the detention center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Provide recommendations on goals, policy, and strategic decision-making to the Assistant County Manager's leadership team.
  • Operational Oversight: Oversee the overall operations of the detention center, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and legislation.
  • Safety and Security: Ensure the safety and security of the detention center, its personnel, inmates, and the general public.
  • Process Development: Develop and implement operational processes, including planning, scheduling, procurement, grants, and financial management.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with subordinate division leaders to focus on streamlined processes and develop efficient workflow procedures.
  • Representation: Represent the detention center at meetings of local leaders, advisory councils, and other organizations.
Accountabilities
  • Facility Inspection: Inspect the facility in accordance with American Jail Association guidelines and respond to corrective action identified as a result of inspections.
  • External Support: Request outside affiliated law enforcement agencies for assistance when needed and summon additional personnel as required.
  • Policy Development: Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Financial Management: Manage the detention center's budget, including monitoring expenditures and inventory, and evaluating performance measures and processes.
  • Community Representation: Represent the detention center in community and special events, and coordinate its involvement in marketing, communications, and community education functions.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certifications and Experience: Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field preferred. Relevant experience or certification may substitute for education. Five (5) years' experience in public or business administration, law enforcement administration, or corrections administration preferred.
  • Certifications, Skills, and Licenses: Valid New Mexico driver's license required. Certified Jail Administrator certification preferred. Ability to follow and provide effective communication verbally and in writing. Good communications and public relations skills required.
