Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment. May be assigned as an instructor in areas of specific competence. Job SpecificationsEducation and Experience

Graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology. Required to be registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Preferred to be licensed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IDNS) and registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).

Job Knowledge

The ultrasonographer performs all ultrasound techniques and examinations, abdominal scans, retroperitoneal scans, OB and gynecological scans, and other anatomical areas as required and minor surgical procedures. Selects appropriate transducer. Performs exam. Makes hard copy images as needed. Documents tests. Assists physician as needed for invasive procedures. Must be able to perform duties as a radiographer if needed. The patient population must be considered when assessing job knowledge required from the employee.

Abilities, Interests, and Temperaments

Verbal ability is necessary to understand oral and written instructions stated in radiologic, ultrasonic, and medical terms and to exchange information with patient and hospital staff. Spatial perception is necessary to visualize inner structure of the human body in relation to the x-ray tube or the transducer and the film in order to obtain films of diagnostic value. Manual dexterity is necessary to adjust machine controls, arrange, attach, and adjust supportive devices. A preference for scientific and technical activities to master principles, techniques, and imaging principles. A preference for processes, machines, and techniques in obtaining images and developing film. Ability to obtain satisfactory images by following set procedures and standards. Capability to evaluate information based on measurable and verifiable criteria. Ability to make contact with people who may be under physical and emotional stress. Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
