Job Summary:

The Fire Protection Design Specialist position is responsible for operating with minimal supervision while completing project designs and submittals for automatic sprinkler systems. The ideal candidate will be very familiar with Summit Fire & Security's quality documents, procedures, and work instructions as they relate to the design function.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and Development: Design automatic sprinkler systems, including fire pumps, tanks, wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems, using working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
  • Hydraulic Calculations: Perform hydraulic calculations for each design.
  • Submittal Packages: Prepare submittal packages to send to authorities having jurisdiction and subsequent correspondence to achieve design approval.
  • Project Coordination: Participate in coordination meetings with contractors.
  • Design Kick-Off Meetings: Participate in design kick-off meetings.
  • Fabrication Lists: Assist in preparing fabrication lists for pipe fabrication vendors and requisitioning materials for jobs.
  • Field Surveys: Assist in performing field surveys to ensure designs are appropriate for structures.
  • Design-Related Installation Issues: Assist field personnel with design-related installation issues.
  • Job Close-Out Documents: Prepare and submit final job close-out documents after final acceptance testing.
  • Safety Program: Understand and follow Summit Fire & Security's Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies, and procedures.
  • Professional Development: Periodically attend seminars or similar education/training sessions to stay abreast of the latest technology, codes, and standards changes.
  • Communication: Communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
Qualifications:
  • Education and Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. NICET II or NICET III and/or state required certification required. Equivalent experience will be considered assuming the individual pursues NICET education.
  • Experience and Knowledge: 1-2 years' experience as a sprinkler designer required. Construction experience, mechanical aptitude, basic and advanced math skills required.
  • Communication Skills: Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and communicate in English with employees and customers.
  • Systems and Software Skills: Ability to operate a computer, use Microsoft Office required. Familiarity with HydraCad and/or other CAD software preferred.
  • Other Qualifications: Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required. Must be able to comply with Summit Fire & Security's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements.
