Job Summary:

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality ultrasound exams, including invasive procedures, to produce diagnostic images for interpretation. This role requires proficiency in operating ultrasound equipment, positioning patients, and transmitting images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

Responsibilities:
  • Knowledge of department exam protocols and procedures.
  • Compliance with JCAHO and CMS State and Federal Regulations.
  • Adherence to medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
  • Participation in the Performance Improvement (PI) process.
  • Knowledge of hospital policies to reduce the risk of wrong-site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure occurrences.
  • Understanding of Emergency Codes and response procedures.
  • Awareness of location and usage of MSDS Manual, EOC Manual, and Infection Control Manual.
Requirements:
  • ARDMS certification in at least one body or region.
  • Previous experience preferred, with experience in invasive ultrasound procedures highly desirable.
  • Current BCLS certificate.
  • Breast Ultrasound certification preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Selecting appropriate equipment for ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
  • Explaining exams to patients and instructing them in assuming physical positions for exams.
  • Assessing patient pain interfering with procedures and making appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Modifying patient positioning techniques and views relative to patients' physical and cognitive abilities.
  • Utilizing optimum technical factors to maximize resolution and setting high personal standards for image quality.
  • Completing examination worksheets accurately and consistently.
  • Working at a consistent pace with other workers and assisting radiologists with procedures by having all supplies and equipment ready.
  • Participating in medical and surgical aseptic procedures, maintaining a sterile field, and labeling items on the sterile tray.
  • Ensuring patient consent for procedures is obtained by the performing radiologist.
  • Taking care of patients' physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs from neonate to geriatric.
  • Transporting and positioning patients accurately for all phases of diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Maintaining on-call response time within hospital policy and using a pager while on standby.
  • Collecting data for the PI Program and participating in the department PI Program.
  • Documenting and reporting PI issues to supervisors.
  • Performing all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Understanding and practicing proper use of all equipment, never operating equipment inconsistent with manufacturer instructions.
  • Checking and logging Trophon as required.
  • Using personal protective equipment appropriately and regularly.
  • Informing and educating patients and families regarding procedures to be performed.
  • Ascertaining patient understanding of processes and informed consent.
  • Checking patients' identification before exams by at least two methods.
  • Reducing risk of healthcare-acquired infections through proper hand washing and equipment disinfecting.
  • Following hospital policies to reduce risk of wrong-site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure occurrences.
  • Assisting radiologists during procedures such as thoracenteses, paracenteses, fine needle aspirations, etc.
  • Working to improve effectiveness of communication among caregivers.
  • Communicating and documenting patient's condition/history for radiologists.
  • Obtaining all applicable results of prior examinations.
  • Calling all abnormal results that are given verbally read back to ensure accuracy.
  • Demonstrating safe and careful use of all equipment.
  • Reporting all equipment malfunctions and calling for service immediately using department protocol.
  • Attending scheduled in-service and mandatory in-service.
  • Communicating ideas to supervisors for a safer layout of equipment, tools, and/or processes.
  • Following standard precautions and transmission-based precautions as shown by consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Adhering to procedures for the disposal of waste - household waste and biohazard waste as well as the proper disposal of sharps.
  • Using proper body mechanics at all times and seeking assistance when necessary to move heavy objects or transport/transfer heavy patients.
  • Being knowledgeable in the hospital safety program and taking necessary steps to maintain a safe environment.
  • Adhering to safe work practices to prevent injuries and illnesses.
  • Being familiar with emergency codes and emergency preparedness procedures and understanding their role in response to each of the emergency codes.
  • Maintaining the department in a neat, clean, and orderly manner, especially in own work area.
  • Eliminating or assisting in eliminating any seen or known hazards in the workplace.
  • Reporting any unsafe conditions to immediate supervisors.
  • Demonstrating good safety habits and judgment by maintaining a safe environment at all times.
  • Complying with all hospital safety and injury prevention policies and regulations.
  • Understanding the Continuous Quality Improvement Process and applying it in performing everyday tasks/duties.
  • Participating in the Continuous Quality Improvement program by assisting in finding new and better ways of performing duties and responsibilities.
