Position Overview
The Tennessee Middle Probation and Pretrial Services is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Probation Officer. This position plays a crucial role in overseeing individuals placed on probation, ensuring compliance with court orders, and facilitating rehabilitation.
Qualifications
Applicants must be citizens of the United States or possess eligibility to work within the country. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in fields such as criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or public administration is required. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, sound health, and must be under 37 years of age at the time of appointment unless they have prior federal law enforcement experience. A valid driver's license is also necessary.
The above qualifications are non-negotiable.
Experience and Preferred Skills
Candidates who have additional relevant experience may qualify for higher salary brackets. Relevant experience includes roles in probation, parole, corrections, or criminal investigations. Experience in law enforcement or security roles is not considered applicable.
- In-depth knowledge of federal laws and the criminal justice system as it pertains to probation and pretrial services.
- Proficient in supervising individuals under supervision, particularly those with challenging behaviors, employing negotiation and motivational techniques.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment; demonstrated skills in legal reasoning and analytical thinking.
- Familiarity with automated resources for conducting background checks and accessing criminal history databases.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to compile and summarize information efficiently.
- Understanding of legal terminology.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with diverse populations including defendants, law enforcement, and legal professionals.
- Commitment to safety protocols in both office and community settings.
- A master's degree is preferred.
Classification Level Requirements
- CL 25 - Requires one year of specialized experience and a bachelor's degree.
- CL 27 - Requires two years of specialized experience or a master's degree.
- CL 28 - Requires more than two years of specialized experience and a master's degree.

Additional Information
The starting salary range is dependent on qualifications and experience. Officers may be eligible for regular salary increases based on performance. Opportunities for advancement within the organization are available to qualified employees.
Participation in the federal retirement system is mandatory. This position is subject to federal retirement provisions, with mandatory retirement at age 57. Time served in other federal agencies or military service may be considered for leave accrual and retirement benefits.
