Compensation: $32.06 IUOE Union

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for the repair, rebuilding, or overhaul of major components in internal combustion vehicles, including cars, buses, trucks, and tractors. Key responsibilities include diagnosing issues, determining repair needs, replacing worn or damaged parts such as piston rings and bearings, grinding and adjusting valves, rebuilding carburetors, overhauling transmissions, and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. This role requires comprehensive training and experience typically gained through formal apprenticeship or equivalent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures equipment availability by inspecting and testing vehicles; performing preventive maintenance tasks such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Maintains vehicle functionality by addressing operator concerns; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; fixing mechanical and electrical system issues; replacing parts; and repairing body damage.
  • Confirms vehicle serviceability through test drives and adjustments to controls and systems.
  • Adheres to state vehicle regulations by testing engine performance, safety, and emissions standards.
  • Enhances vehicle appearance through cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Documents vehicle service and repairs to maintain accurate records.
  • Ensures shop equipment operates efficiently by following operational guidelines; troubleshooting issues; maintaining supplies; and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Manages inventory by tracking stock levels; placing orders; and verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Stays updated on industry knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities and reviewing technical literature.
  • Completes maintenance and organizational tasks as required.

Additional Responsibilities:

Handles GSA calls for repair approvals. Submits purchase requisitions to material expeditors. Operates shop equipment safely. Performs other assigned duties as needed.

Qualifications:

Attendance Requirements:

  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with potential weekend shifts for sign-offs, 100%
  • Shift: Day shift
  • Attendance: Regular attendance is critical, 100%
  • Punctuality: Essential, 100%
  • Work hours typically consist of 8 hours per day and 5 days per week, Monday to Friday. Consistent attendance and punctuality are necessary. Flexibility in workdays is required to accommodate weekend repair needs.

Other Essential Functions:

Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, health performance evaluation, and background check. Must exhibit professional behavior at all times when interacting with customers, management, and colleagues. Clear and effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are essential. Grooming and attire must be suitable for the position and not pose safety risks. A positive work atmosphere must be maintained through professional behavior and communication. Reliable personal transportation to the work site is required.
