Position Overview

The Montebello Unified School District is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of School Safety Officer. This position is crucial in ensuring a secure and orderly environment for students and staff alike.

Key Responsibilities:

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Under general oversight, the School Safety Officer will be responsible for monitoring and patrolling school facilities, grounds, parking lots, and surrounding areas to uphold safety and security standards. The officer will facilitate communication among students and staff to foster a safe educational atmosphere, provide necessary interventions, and reinforce behavioral expectations. Additionally, the officer will conduct wellness and academic assessments for all students, including English Learners, Foster Youth, and those from low-income backgrounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
  1. Monitoring and patrolling school premises to deter illegal activities and maintain order.
  2. Observing and addressing students or visitors who appear to be loitering or out of class.
  3. Supervising student behavior to prevent vandalism, theft, and other unlawful actions.
  4. Providing interventions and reinforcing behavioral expectations.
  5. Managing crowds during athletic and special events to ensure safety and prevent misconduct.
  6. Assisting in emergency evacuations and reporting safety hazards.
  7. Educating students about legal matters relevant to juveniles and available community resources.
  8. Documenting incidents and preparing reports as required.
  9. Conducting investigations related to incidents and escorting students as necessary.
  10. Facilitating communication between students and school officials to enhance safety.
  11. Engaging with local community leaders to monitor and mitigate gang-related activities.
  12. Responding to classroom incidents involving students with weapons or under the influence of substances.
Qualifications:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
  1. Understanding of California state laws related to juveniles.
  2. Record-keeping and basic investigative techniques.
  3. Awareness of adolescent behavior and effective interpersonal skills.
  4. Health and safety regulations.
  5. Positive intervention strategies.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to patrol and monitor school environments effectively.
  2. Ensure compliance with school policies and regulations.
  3. Prepare detailed reports on incidents and student interactions.
  4. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  5. Establish and maintain positive relationships with students and staff.
  6. Assess situations accurately and determine appropriate actions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • One year of experience in security or a related field, preferably with youth.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Completion of a school security officer training course.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, running, and standing for extended periods.
  • Capacity to handle confrontational situations with composure.
