The Senior Vice President of Immunology Strategy collaborates closely with the R&D Therapeutic Area Lead to formulate and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive Immunology Therapeutic Area (TA) Strategy. A primary duty of the joint leadership is to ensure a fully integrated and cohesive Therapeutic Area Leadership Team (TALT) while partnering with functional heads to guarantee that the execution of the TA portfolio aligns with the established TA priorities.

The Commercial TA Lead is tasked with guiding the Commercial Development TA team in crafting and executing global commercial strategies for pipeline products, ensuring full integration across marketing, medical, and market access to prepare for optimal value and accessibility. This includes developing thorough 'go to market' strategies that are in alignment with above-market stakeholders and regional leaders for all pipeline products within the TA, ensuring a seamless transition at T-24 months prior to launch.

Main Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Provide motivational leadership to both direct and matrixed reports, reflecting the CSL Leadership capabilities and core company values.
  • Guide the TA team in developing and continuously refining a fully integrated TA Strategy by driving a robust and innovative portfolio of new products and lifecycle management (LCM) opportunities. Present the TA Strategy, priorities, and plans to executive management and the board, demonstrating profound TA knowledge and inspirational leadership.
  • Establish the end-to-end portfolio strategy and prioritization for the TA, ensuring a balanced mix of high and low-risk initiatives, both short and long-term, to drive business outcomes. Manage risks, opportunities, and trade-offs within the TA portfolio, providing necessary context for decisions across the entire portfolio.
  • Contribute to functional planning and collaborate with functional leads to ensure resource allocation and project execution align with TA portfolio priorities. Oversee the development of integrated project plans for both R&D projects and commercial activities, including the approval of Target Product Profiles (TPPs).
  • Define the business development strategy for the TA and conduct initial evaluations of new product opportunities, recommending progression to due diligence.
  • Ensure that the TA's market shaping strategy and decision-making processes are informed by robust commercial insights, as well as scientific and medical validity. Actively engage and incorporate the perspectives of patients, healthcare providers, and payers throughout all development stages to deliver innovative therapies that address genuine unmet needs. Critically assess all opportunities and projects with a focus on market access and the competitive landscape, conducting regular reviews.
  • Collaborate with other TAs and Portfolio Management to develop best practices and align on cross-functional issues, including product supply and technical platforms.

Decision-Making Authority:

  • Provide guidance to Cross-Functional Project Teams (CPTs) to enhance project plans, resolve challenges, and seize opportunities.
  • Facilitate rapid resolution of project issues and risks within scope, timelines, and budget.
  • Manage interdependencies of projects to enable adequate resource and timeline planning, as well as share lessons learned.
  • Assess readiness for Project Go/No Go decisions for Project Review Committee endorsement.
  • Prepare and coach teams for clear and effective governance presentations.

This role also encompasses oversight of the Global Commercial Development Portfolio Planning team. This team is responsible for providing strategic direction and commercial insights into research and early R&D programs, business development activities, and lifecycle management of existing products. This includes the development and execution of the commercial portfolio strategy in collaboration with TAs and cross-functional teams, such as marketing, market access, and medical affairs. They will lead the evaluation of market opportunities, competitive landscapes, and therapeutic trends to identify strategic areas for portfolio expansion and optimization. Additionally, they will offer commercial strategic guidance on in-licensing, out-licensing, and acquisition opportunities to enhance the company's portfolio and competitive positioning. Furthermore, they will provide commercial insights to shape the development program of research and early-stage pipeline products, ensuring a seamless transition of assets from early-stage to late-stage development and commercialization while overseeing the prioritization and implementation of LCM initiatives in collaboration with marketing and R&D.

Qualifications & Experience Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in science or business, preferably in life sciences or healthcare; an MBA or other graduate degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, encompassing various roles in R&D, sales and marketing, and/or business development.
  • Operational leadership experience at a country level, in addition to roles at a global or regional level, is strongly preferred.
  • Extensive commercial knowledge in the therapeutic area and proven experience in launching new products and growing established ones.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams within a global organization, with a demonstrated ability to develop strategies and translate them into long-term execution plans.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Familiarity with global regulations and cultural nuances.
  • Strong change management and leadership capabilities.
