General Overview:

James Madison University is excited to announce an opening for an Academic Advisor within the School of Strategic Leadership Studies (SSLS). SSLS fosters a vibrant and supportive work atmosphere that aligns with the university's mission by offering a doctoral-level program in Strategic Leadership Studies.

Key Responsibilities:

The Academic Advisor plays a vital role within the unit, collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing office operations for SSLS, including managing departmental files and processing paperwork related to faculty and student travel, financial reports, and student records.
  • Creating and managing processes for student support initiatives, such as travel grants, research funding, and summer tuition assistance.
  • Coordinating the hiring of Doctoral Assistants and temporary staff.
  • Managing departmental space, technology, and procurement needs.
  • Developing and maintaining digital and print materials for student recruitment and departmental events, including website content and newsletters.
  • Organizing student events and the bi-annual Leading Change Conference, as well as contributing to fundraising efforts.

As a liaison between the School and its students, the Academic Advisor will:

  • Assist current graduate students with course scheduling, enrollment, and academic planning.
  • Manage student records and monitor progress toward degree completion.
  • Communicate university policies and procedures to students and faculty, ensuring compliance with degree requirements.
  • Develop and distribute advising strategies to support students and faculty.
  • Handle inquiries from prospective students and oversee the admissions process.

  • Basic understanding of bookkeeping principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with social media management for student engagement.
  • Strong writing skills for digital and print content.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies.
