Responsibilities

The Environmental Scientist II will deliver environmental support and ensure regulatory compliance at the NNSS and other MSTS-operated locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of facilities to verify compliance with air quality, wastewater, drinking water, solid waste, chemical reporting, and other environmental regulations.
  • Review planning and activity-level documents to ensure environmental considerations are incorporated.
  • Represent Environmental Compliance in Integrated Project Team meetings and other collaborative sessions.
  • Evaluate projects and activities for adherence to established procedures and plans.
  • Identify and track deficiencies to resolution and closure.
  • Gather information, review analytical reports, and perform necessary calculations for permit documentation and other deliverables.
  • Develop and update company documents related to environmental protection initiatives.
  • Collaborate with operational personnel and regulatory authorities.
  • Analyze data for compliance with established environmental limits.
  • Prepare both routine and specialized reports.
  • Respond to environmental incidents such as spills and releases of regulated substances, and prepare necessary documentation.
  • Collect and evaluate environmental data from various company sources.
  • Work with senior staff on environmental programs, particularly in areas such as water quality and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), along with other assigned areas.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a calculus-based STEM field, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. Experience should demonstrate either deeper technical expertise or broader interdisciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be considered.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Capability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments.
  • Strong judgment and ability to follow both oral and written instructions in completing assigned tasks.
  • Proficiency in planning and organizing work to ensure timely completion of assignments.
  • Skill in interpreting scientific and technical documents and regulations.
  • Ability to compose permit and regulatory reports based on scientific data and field information.
  • Primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site.
  • Work schedule will typically be 4/10s, Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
  • A pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen, is mandatory. MSTS enforces a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
