Seattle, Washington, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we aspire to create a future where countless individuals can thrive and contribute in space, enhancing life on Earth. Our mission involves the development of safe, reusable, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all while fostering a culture centered on safety, teamwork, and inclusivity. Become a part of our innovative team of engineers as we embark on new ventures in the realm of space exploration.

Lunar Transport Solutions: This position is integral to the Lunar Transport division, which is responsible for the creation of Blue Origin's various Blue Moon lander product lines. To advance our vision of enabling human presence in space, we are establishing sustainable infrastructure for transporting both crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar environment.

As a key member of a dedicated team of engineers, you will engage in the design and evaluation of spacecraft subsystems, ensuring the delivery of safe, dependable, and ready-to-install hardware that adheres to specified requirements, all while managing costs and timelines effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in the complete design process of pressure vessels and structures for space vehicles, covering conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing, and qualification.
  • Create component and assembly drawings, along with interface control documents, applying GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Develop documentation for the assembly and testing of both development and flight hardware.
  • Participate in subsystem-level testing, including planning, execution, data analysis, and reduction.
  • Establish component specifications and oversee supplier management.
  • Utilize your experience and engineering insight to swiftly design and produce non-flight, proof-of-concept hardware for dynamic research and development initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience, particularly in designing aerospace or similar mechanical system components within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles.
  • Proficient mechanical design, integration, and mechanism analysis skills using 3D modeling CAD software (such as CREO, NX, or Catia).
  • Experience with simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS or NASTRAN).
  • Familiarity with GD&T analysis (ASME Y14.5) and conducting tolerance stacks.
  • Understanding of manufacturing, assembly, integration, and qualification testing processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Experience in specifying and justifying margins and test sequences for aerospace systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proven ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or legally admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with industry and regulatory standards such as JSC-65858, ANSI/AIAA S-080A-2018, and NASA-STD-5020.
  • Strong knowledge of finite element analysis (preferably ANSYS) and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Understanding of complex cryogenic systems, including pressure vessels.
  • Experience with composite and metallic materials, particularly in cryogenic applications.
  • Experience in the design, analysis, qualification, and launch of pressurized flight hardware.
  • Knowledge of fatigue and fracture mechanics.
  • General familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties, including low and high cycle fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture, and shock and vibration response.
  • Experience with pneumatic/cryogenic pressure systems, including fluid fittings, flexible elements, welded tubing, and weight-critical pressure vessels.
Compensation:
The compensation range for applicants is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Inclusivity Statement:
At Blue Origin, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you are excited about this role but do not meet every single qualification, we encourage you to apply. You may be the right candidate for this or other positions.
