Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider

Job Summary
The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider will provide direct patient care in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, including attending physicians and other medical professionals. This role will involve collecting and documenting data, obtaining/ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional consultations.
Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
- Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations.
- Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post-treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
- Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgment, including prescribing appropriate medications.
- Chart patient progress, maintaining detailed and accurate health records.
- Oversight of emergency management of patients.
- Assessment of acutely ill patients awaiting admission to the hospital.
- Additional orders for symptom management as needed.
- Collaboration with inpatient medical team for handoff.
- Prescription of medications for symptom management.
- Additional orders as needed.
- Address lab values if outside of regimen parameters to determine if patient can receive treatment.
- Order supplements as needed based on lab values.
- Potential procedures.
- Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
- Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
- Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
- See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
- Attend program required meetings.
- Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
- Maintain Institutional requirements for compliance.
- Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
Requirements
- Education: Graduate of MSN or DNP accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or Graduate of ARC accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program.
- Certification: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.) or PA-C.
- Licensure: Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP or Unrestricted license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA.
- Federal and State DEA independent license with prescriptive authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- APP experience is preferred, ideally Oncology/Hematologic Malignancy experience, but recent or new grads, graduating by December 2024 are welcome to apply.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented clinic.
- Willingness to be flexible and available to support the team.
- Analytical thinking skills with curiosity and ability to investigate and diagnose.
- Competence with technology.
- Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
- Experience working independently and as a part of a team.
- The desire and willingness to continue to learn.
