About the Role

The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider will provide direct patient care on the inpatient medical oncology unit at Duke University Hospital. This role will work in collaboration with attending physicians and other medical professionals to collect and document data, obtain/order diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies, and professional consultations. The age-specific scope of practice is between 18 and older.

Key Responsibilities

The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for promoting and maintaining high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis. This will include eliciting detailed and accurate patient histories, performing thorough physical examinations, ordering appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests, and formulating treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgment. The provider will also be responsible for charting patient progress, maintaining detailed and accurate health records, and participating in clinical research projects.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree from an accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care or a graduate degree from an accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program. The candidate must also have any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.) or PA-C certification. Additionally, the candidate must have unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP or unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA. Federal and State DEA independent license with prescriptive authority is also required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a team-oriented inpatient unit is preferred, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Analytical thinking skills with curiosity and ability to investigate and diagnose are also essential. Competence with technology, excellent communication skills, and customer service skills are also required. The desire and willingness to continue to learn and grow in the role are also essential.

Work Environment

The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider will work in a fast-paced inpatient medical oncology unit at Duke University Hospital. The unit is a regional emergency/trauma center with 1048 patient beds, 65 operating rooms, and comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. The provider will work closely with attending physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals to provide high-quality patient care.
