Director of Industrial Engineering

The Director of Industrial Engineering will be a key member of the New Product Introduction (NPI) Manufacturing Operations leadership team with broad responsibilities including developing a vision and strategy for Industrial Engineering within Intuitive, hiring, coaching, and mentoring Industrial Engineering Managers and team members, fostering a continuous improvement culture, while partnering with cross-functional teams within Process Engineering and Global Operations (Planning, Supply Chain, and Logistics) to make progress towards excellence in execution in development and manufacturing of high-quality, minimally invasive robotic surgical equipment.
Responsibilities:- Manage, coach, and mentor a high-performing Industrial Engineering team while also setting performance expectations, conducting regular performance evaluations, and identifying training needs to enhance the skills and knowledge of team members.
- Review production data, performance metrics, and operational parameters to identify trends, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
- Make data-driven recommendations to optimize cycle time, cost, productivity, and overall factory performance.
- Aid in the development and maintenance of manufacturing capacity models.
- Partner with the Center of Excellence (COE) team to help drive the digital manufacturing transformation strategy and recommend solutions and resources needed to execute and deliver on projects.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement by promoting lean manufacturing methods, driving waste reduction initiatives, and implementing best practices across the factory.
- Encourage employee involvement and engagement in process improvement activities.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, evaluate existing workflows through value stream mapping, and develop strategies to enhance Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Overall Labor Effectiveness (OLE), and increase throughput and capacity.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee Industrial Engineering deliverables for NPI projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to high-quality standards.
- Implement and oversee the automation of models, such as equipment capacity and headcount planning.
- Leverage advanced data analytics and machine learning techniques to improve decision-making and operational efficiency.
- Lead cross-functional teams to design and optimize the layout of factories, equipment, workstations, and production lines.
- Develop and drive factory blueprinting for consistent replication regionally and ensure efficient utilization of space and resources.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of manufacturing processes, standard operating procedures (SOP), and work instructions (WI).
- Ensure consistent implementation and adherence to established procedures.
- Develop expertise in the organization around core Industrial Engineering methods such as factory design, labor capacity planning, line stabilizing, value stream mapping, time study research, production cell design, process and material flow optimization, lean/Six Sigma, and data analytics through structured programs and initiatives.
- Develop system-level expertise for Industrial Engineers in SAP-S4, SAP ME, Agile, O9, and other business systems within Intuitive.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Industrial Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering or a related field.
- 15+ years' experience in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering roles within a regulated industry.
- Prior experience in leadership roles is required.
- Experience in medium to high-volume manufacturing operations.
- Proficiency in data analysis and statistical tools.
- Familiarity with process simulation software, optimization tools, and manufacturing execution systems (SAP ME preferred) is required.
- Experience in new facility design and expertise in efficient production line layouts is required.
- Proactive approach towards driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience in implementing a Lean/CI culture, Six Sigma methodologies, and other process improvement frameworks.
- Knowledge of smart manufacturing rules, methodologies, and emerging technologies.
- Solid technical foundation in medical device manufacturing is preferred.
- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification and practicing LSS values is preferred.
- Experience setting up and driving improvements in OEE/OLE/process capability and other factory performance metrics.
- Experience working in a new product introduction (NPI) environment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of equipment qualification and process validation in a medical device environment is preferred.
- Proven track record in successfully managing complex engineering projects from initiation to completion.
- Proven organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to influence, motivate, and inspire a team.
- Excellent communication and social skills to partner with cross-functional teams and present ideas and solutions to stakeholders at various levels.
- Problem-solving abilities with a data-driven mindset.
- Ability to dissect complex situations, identify root causes, and propose innovative solutions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and tight deadlines.
- Resilience to handle challenges and adjusting to new technologies and processes.
Travel: 25% is required to other manufacturing sites within Intuitive.

It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
