Role Summary:
The Surgical Technologist collaborates with the Health Care Team to provide exceptional health care services to patients, embodying Kaiser Permanente's mission, vision, and values while adhering to the principles of the Labor Management Partnership (LMP). This role is integral in fostering a high-performance culture through joint decision-making processes as outlined in the Labor Management Partnership Vision Reaffirmation and Understandings Booklet. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting both patients and the Health Care team to enhance population-based care, ensure continuity of care, elevate customer satisfaction, and promote self-care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with a caring, flexible, and respectful attitude that supports a collaborative team environment. The Surgical Technologist will take on the scrub role during surgical operations and coordinate activities with other operating room professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performance Standards: Adhere to organizational policies and procedures regarding attendance and reliability. Monitor and address attendance issues proactively. Ensure timely return from breaks and maintain adequate coverage. Limit personal activities to non-patient care areas during breaks. Follow the Time Keeping Policy to accurately reflect work hours. Stay informed about organizational policies and updates. Participate in unit Quality Assurance Programs. Commit to continuous learning and professional development. Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational records in compliance with HIPAA standards. Foster collaboration and professional interaction within the health care team. Uphold department Standards of Behavior and engage in relevant inservices and staff meetings.
- Assessment Standards: Ensure effective communication to maintain continuity of care. Interact with patients, families, and staff in a professional manner. Acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver culturally sensitive care through education and experience. Participate in pre-operative briefings and time-out procedures, providing ongoing reassessment during the intra-operative phase.
- Planning Standards: Utilize knowledge of surgical procedures to prepare appropriately. Demonstrate the skills needed to provide age-appropriate care through training and experience.
- Implementation Standards: Initiate measures based on established protocols for managing intra-operative patients. Apply aseptic techniques, evaluate sterile supplies, and maintain an organized sterile environment. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team while adhering to sterile techniques. Execute all necessary procedures to ensure patient safety during surgery. Assist with patient positioning and transfer, ensuring proper body alignment. Examine and transport instruments according to protocols. Manage sterile core activities, including case cart preparation, supply restocking, and room turnover processes. Participate in emergency response measures and collaborate with the Circulator for upcoming cases.

- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.
- Surgical Technologist Certification required upon hire.
- Understanding of sterile core practices.
- Familiarity with sterile techniques, operating room protocols, and equipment.
- Strong manual dexterity and ability to maintain effective relationships.
- Capacity to follow instructions accurately.
- Two to five years of experience in scrubbing for various surgical procedures in inpatient or outpatient settings.
- Able to rotate through sterile core areas.
- Experience in cleaning and reprocessing instruments, managing supplies, and preparing case carts.
