Role Overview –
The Operating Room Surgical Specialist plays a vital role within the surgical team, collaborating with nursing staff to provide essential support services that ensure the safe and effective care of patients across various surgical departments. This position involves assisting in the surgical environment by passing instruments and supplies to surgical team members while maintaining a sterile field. The specialist is responsible for preparing and equipping surgical suites, ensuring that quality care is delivered to patients undergoing surgical interventions in line with their individual needs, care standards, and institutional policies. Additionally, this role may include assisting in non-surgical patient care under the direct supervision of a physician or registered nurse. Responsibilities may also extend to serving as a Core Technician, focusing on maintaining sterile techniques and supplying instruments as required. Additional duties may encompass staff training, inventory management, vendor relations, birth certificate processing, or other administrative responsibilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES –
Primary Duties:
· Execute scrub duties across all specialties requiring surgical intervention.
· Safeguard equipment from damage or misuse; report any issues to the appropriate personnel.
· Foster effective communication with physicians, staff, and management.
· Mentor and train new surgical technologists and students.
Occasional but Critical Duties:
· Notify the appropriate personnel to update preference cards as requested by physicians.
· Engage in the evaluation and implementation of new supplies and equipment.
· Attend and contribute to staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing education sessions.
· Participate in vendor oversight and management in accordance with departmental and institutional protocols.
Decision-Making and Budget Responsibilities:
· Impact is limited to the individual employee.
· No budgetary responsibilities.

JOB REQUIREMENTSEducation:
Required:
· Completion of a program accredited by a nationally recognized organization such as CAAHEP or ABHES, with national Surgical certification from NBSTSA, JCAHPO, or NCCT obtained within one year of graduation; or
· Completion of a surgical technologist training program in a branch of the U.S. armed forces or the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, along with 16 hours of continuing education every two years as mandated by departmental tracking; or
· At least two years of surgical technology practice between specified years in a hospital, ambulatory surgical center, or as a federal employee, with 16 hours of continuing education every two years tracked by the department.

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:
Required:
· National Surgical certification from NBSTSA, JCAHPO, or NCCT to be obtained within one year of graduation, unless eligible under armed forces training or having practiced for a minimum of two years within specified years.
· American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
