Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Activities Assistant to join our team at Alexander Guest House. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of activity programs to meet the spiritual, emotional, recreational, and social needs of our residents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and setting up activities as planned by the Activity Director
  • Clean the activity room between activities
  • Invite residents to activities and assist them in returning to their apartments
  • Attend activity planning meetings with the Activity Director
  • Assist volunteers with activities
  • Assist with cleaning the bus
  • Transport residents as needed
  • Observe residents for changes in condition and report to the Activity Director
  • Continue activities in the absence of the Activity Director
  • Help with putting up and taking down holiday themes
  • Notify care staff of nursing needs
  • Attend all staff meetings
Requirements
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in the English language
  • Must possess a high school degree or equivalent
  • One year of experience working with the elderly is desired
  • Should have a creative aptitude for training in arts, crafts, and games
Physical Demands

The physical demands of this job include standing, bending, talking, and hearing. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit, and occasionally required to climb stairs. The employee must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds and lift and transfer residents using proper body mechanics.

Work Environment

The work environment conditions include working in well-lighted and ventilated areas, subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, substances, odors, and hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, visitors, and government agencies.

  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
  • Must be caring and compassionate in dealing with residents and staff
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile people within the facility
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, employees, and outside contacts
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies and the general public
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices
  • Must be willing to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary
